Meet LaToya Berthil of Sistanatureteas & Sista Nature Yoga

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaToya Berthil.

Hi LaToya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my tea business as Taylor Made holistic offering education and herbal teas as a way of facilitating a holistic lifestyle. I have always been a tea lover and while I was studying for my bachelor’s in health and wellness, I decided to start learning more about herbalism and how herbs help us heal as well as preventative health. Everyone around me was suffering with some sort of chronic illness and I wanted to do something to help. Also, I conducted a needs assessment for the county of San Bernardino and found that mental health services and complementary and alternative methods were lacking. I then ventured out to become a certified yoga instructor and haven’t looked back. I now teach yoga in schools and in my own space as well as I’ve started a nonprofit offering free yoga to those in need with economic challenges. I conduct a free yoga in the park monthly with tea and meditation and create an accessible space for those on their yoga journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of my struggles include having access to capital. I started my business with a 10k cash seed and it’s been hard securing capital to scale. Also marketing. Not my strong point and with all the tech of the different social media mediums has been challenging to keep up with. As a smaller business owner, you tend to do everything including the creation of your product down to marketing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sistanatureteas & sista nature yoga?
I own an herbal tea company that offers teas for wellness. I also am a yoga instructor and offer in-studio classes as well as free yoga sessions in the park via my newly established nonprofit Community-Tea Wellness.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Riding bikes around lake Ponchatrain at my grandfather’s home with my cousins and visiting my grandmother in uptown New Orleans and having sleepovers with my cousins.
