Meet LaRae Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaRae Wilson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us LaRae. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a Fashion/Costume Designer. I Costume Design for feature films, theater, music videos and commercials. I design red carpet gowns for celebrities, weddings and special occasion gowns under my own label LaRae Mychel.

I was an education major at Whitter College, and I was very successful in the Education industry. I taught, teachers, students, I created curriculum and built schools as an Operations Manager.

I wasn’t satisfied spiritually or creatively, so I prayed and God showed me my next steps…and I followed. I created a T-shirt line called Bipolar Gear, I quickly saw success and was asked to show my line all over the country.

I pushed myself to learn to sew, I stayed up many nights listening to Charlie Wilson, watching YouTube tutorials practicing and learning my craft.

I soon rewarded for my efforts and my career took off. I showed my gowns and designs all over the country. I broadened my design career to red carpet gowns, swimsuits and finally custom costumes for corporate events. Over the last seven years, I have costumed several movies and have over 50 projects on my resume.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s not been a smooth road, but nothing worth having is. I lost everything!! I made a transition from a well-paying career in education to the unknown world that I was teaching myself about at nights while my sons were sleep.

I lost my home, cars everything. But I never gave up and my kids and I stuck it out we had friends and family that let us stay with them while we were in it is transition period.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a Costume/Fashion Designer. I specialize in high-end amazing one-of-a-kind gowns and costumes. I also work in the movies industry as a costume designer.

My life on movie sets and theaters is much different from my life a fashion designer for runway shows and being my own boss and creative lead for my label.

Movies require collaboration from all the creative visual departments, lighting, productions design, the actor, the directors and finally the costume designer.

As a fashion designer, its really just you and the fabric telling a story. I can be as detailed as I want to be or as simple as I want to be.

My goals for both are to be the BEST!!!! I am known for my quality, creativity and my eye for detail and style.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I hope to see more sustainable designers. Sustainable Designers are designers that use recycled fabric, designers that up-cycle existing garments or designers that are zero waste (which means they use every scrap of fabric they cut) Fashion is one of the biggest reasons our world is in such a bad way. We live in a fast-food fashion world, we have clothes in overflowing landfills and we pollute our oceans with the fabric dying process.
