Meet Lara DeFord, Krista Fulton and Karen Du of Morning Wood Podcast in East Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lara DeFord, Krista Fulton and Karen Du.

Lara, Krista and Karen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As friends and roommates, we wanted to start doing a podcast together. We were struggling to find a subject all of us could be passionate about when we landed on the topic of America’s Sweetheart, Elijah Wood, and his favorite things. We settled on a name that made us all laugh – Morning Wood is typically a term monopolized by penis-havers so the idea of having a comedic podcast co-hosted by three women under that name made us giggle. We still laugh about it because we’re as mature as we are clever.

So far, there are four seasons, i.e., 60 episodes of Morning Wood, and each episode focuses on a different subject within Elijah Wood’s many favorite things. We’ve covered his favorite scary movie, Pokémon, underwear, chip, musical, set of twins, deep sea creature… basically, he’s got a lot of interests (and we also take topic suggestions from listeners).

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been an interesting road! There’s been the regular issues that accompany making a podcast – we’re a small operation running out of our apartment so we’ve had our fair share of technical issues (anything from mics breaking to the late-night neighborhood ice cream truck ruining recording sessions) and we do all of our own editing. It’s a lot of work and we struggle with breaking even, but we love doing it!

Please tell us about Morning Wood Podcast.
Morning Wood starts with us discussing pretty much anything that happens to come up in our candid conversation, followed by the introduction of the episode’s topic, our personal connections and thoughts on it, and then each of us making a case for what we think Elijah Wood’s favorite thing within the topic is. We release a new episode every Wednesday (provided we’re not on mid-season hiatus), and can be found on Spotify, iTunes, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, and the other usual podcast listening spots.

We like to think we hit that sweet spot of silly humor while also being willing to tackle weird or uncomfortable topics. We’re not afraid to be stupid, we bring a unique set of views to the table, and we provide voices from a variety of communities that are generally considered “other.”

Also, we want Elijah Wood to come on our podcast.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Podcasts are basically pirate radio right now so it could go any number of ways! We’re banking on Elijah Wood becoming the next multi-media conglomerate/podcasting empire so that we’ll be ahead of the game.
