Today we’d like to introduce you to LaQuinta Davis.
Hi LaQuinta, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started designing as a distraction to the pain of losing my mother. I was something to keep my mind out of a dark place. It gave me something to focus on and live for after my mother passed away. I started out making t-shirts and graffiti dresses. I put on my first show in 2016, my second in 2017 and hit different runways shortly thereafter.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has been a struggle, there were many things I didn’t know in the beginning about running a business. I’ve been through a lot of trial and error and have made many financial mistakes but I’ve grown and become a better businesswoman for it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a plus-size fashion designer. I specialize in custom clothing sizes 10-36. I am known for my fashion-studded mask and graffiti moto jackets. I am most proud of the way my clothes make women of size feel.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising about my work and brand is we’ve been designing fashion masks for years before the pandemic. I originally started designing masks to cover the model’s faces so people would be for to look at their body and fashion. I wanted to take away the ability to say, “she’s pretty for a big girl. ”
