Today we’d like to introduce you to LaQuan Wilson.
Hi LaQuan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Right after graduating from my community college (Fayetteville Technical), I moved from my hometown Fayetteville, NC to Los Angeles, CA. At the time I was behind the camera doing photography/videography for models, music artists, and labels. Landed an internship at Motown/Capitol Records as an editor. Almost a year later, I decided to break away and do my own thing. I became a Youtuber posting funny and relatable videos. It was not easy because I was door dashing to keep my bills paid so I could focus on building my social media accounts. My sleep schedule was all over the place and eating habits were insane. I’m getting told by friends and family members maybe it’s time to come on back home and get a 9 to 5. I refused to give up on my dreams and passion so I played it smart by moving out of my apartment that I was sharing with my friend and relocated to Arizona. I would travel back and forth between Phoenix to Los Angeles. Once I got into short-form content of videos being less than a minute, everything just skyrocketed. Last year, I received a million subscribers and the gold plaque which was an amazing right before entering 2023 with a huge celebration. Now my focus is to take things to the next level.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There was some bumpy roads for sure. I’ll never forget eating Little Caesars almost every day because at times that’s all I could afford to last me a few days. I can’t stand to look or eat from them anymore. Moments of doubt because so much was going on that it became so hard to just focus on creating content. Social media changing constantly new features or new guidelines that I had to learn and adapt to. And the pressure from your family and friends.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make funny videos that’s connected to many people’s memories such as your childhood or coming of age. All the videos are written out in scripts, filmed and edited by me. I do other things such as write, make beats, and produce music. I’m most proud that all my talents after college and surviving Los Angeles has paid off. What sets me apart from others is that no matter how hard things get, I don’t ever quit or give up because I’m always looking for strategies and solutions.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Focus on you first! So when your time comes, you are ready. Networking is very important because you never know who’s who. You never who you need or what you need until it’s time.
