Meet LacQuan Scott of LS Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to LacQuan Scott.

LacQuan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey. Always have been a little of an odd kid when it comes to my interests (games, art, comics, music). Not that these aren’t common kid’s interests, but the fact that you are “supposed” to outgrow most of these things. I didn’t, I knew I was meant to be a creative, my older brother and my mom are both into art and are my earliest inspirations. Literally have been drawing as long as I can remember.

I started out with the typical things like looney toons and anime, pretty much any early/late 90s pop culture. I went to Passaic County Tech high school and majored in Advertising Art & Design. I was convinced that the only money in art while living was through the advertising industry (bad advice). Though I was a fine artist at the time, I am thankful because this is where I was introduced to the basics of graphic design. I have been freelancing monetizing my gifts since I was 16 years old. Coincidentally that year, I would start my first official LLP that same year, a clothing line. Going into business legitimately, early on was challenging and the rewards felt minimum at the time but are monumental in hindsight I’ve learned and grown so much from that experience early on.

I’ve had my hands in many things in college, I went to Rutgers University, this helped me grow and establish a brand for myself. I became known as an entrepreneur and no matter how much I struggled, I had people remind me that I was doing the right thing. It wasn’t until around 2015 when I decided to go full into my business as a designer.

2015 was a big year. I changed a lot of habits and began to take my fitness journey serious which coincided with so many things taking off. A healthy body and mind is a conduit for clarity and drives in my opinion. While my team and I grew our studios and businesses, I was also able to lose over 130 lbs. It is important to mention because it was my health journey that made me believe anything is possible and just made me work that much harder. Fast forward, I have a self-sustaining business and am proud to say I am a Black business owner, working for himself and with others instead of working for other people.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been a growing experience. I don’t really believe in success without adversity at some point. Whether it is during an event in your life or during the preparation, there will be struggles.

Personally, I have had the problem of identifying passion(s) vs the things I was born to do. I am an Artist and I promote people to experiment and experience what they can in life. For me, it has been more beneficial to focus on a couple of things at once rather than everything I am interested in. I am an artist and I’m sensitive about my work, or I was in the past. It was something I outgrew, I learned my only competition is myself.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the LS Design story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a graphic designer, brand strategist and consultant. I also manage two studio locations (photo/video and recording)

I specialize in logo design and identity systems. As a company, we are most known for our ability to make clean designs look creative without clutter and creating a system around the logo and brand to ensure that the client establishes a fluid identity across all platforms.

I am just proud that we make our clients and partners happy with our work and studio locations. We are a very comfortable, relatable group. My partners and I are from all walks, but we come together to create great visual art and provide great experiences in person.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I could complain a lot, but I choose to move forward. Mentality was that I came from nothing, what’s a little bit longer? I am built for this, betting on myself is what I do. As long as I’m healthy in mind body and spirit, I feel lucky.
