Meet Kristin Jordan of Unlimited Fitness in SouthBay – Hermosa Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Jordan.

Kristin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Hartland, Michigan. I am a Michigan State fan for all of those wondering. I studied pre-law at Central Michigan University. My fitness journey started back when I was a little girl. My dad was huge into bodybuilding… Back then, I didn’t understand it, but I loved hanging from his biceps. I then started playing t-ball when I was five years old which led into softball all the way into college. In high school, I learned more about lifting and I was hooked. All I did was workout and play softball. Throughout the years, I would train friends for fun and then in 2011; I decided it was time to follow my dream. I had always dreamt of helping others understand nutrition and fitness.

From there, I started my own studio in Royal Oak Michigan designing fitness and nutrition programs as a personal trainer and health coach. In 2013, I launched a corporate wellness training program, which I continue to own and operate today. When we moved to California about four years ago, I knew I had to do my own thing but to get to know the area’s I started working for local gyms to understand the clientele and the market. I was doing one on one training and ran and managed a bootcamp training program. In October 2018, we became the proud owners of Unlimited Fitness in Hermosa Beach, California. I had dreamt of this moment, owning a gym by the beach for so many years.

Unlimited Fitness (previously Vert Fitness) has been open since 2006. I was introduced to the studio and previous owner about nine years ago, through my best friends and long-time members of the studio. I loved the workouts and every time I visited California, I would make a point to come take classes. In 2018, we got word that the owner was planning to sell the gym. When this opportunity for change and redirection came my way, I knew it was meant to be and I could not miss this chance. Through our meetings, we agreed very quickly that I would be the right person to keep his original vision alive while creating the fitness environment and family that I had always dreamed of. This past year we have focused on building a strong sense of community and creating an experience for everyone who walks in the door. No matter their age or fitness level, our workouts are designed to challenge and empower our members and keep them coming back for more. I am so grateful for all of our members who have now become family.

The fitness industry is constantly evolving and your success depends highly on how you’ll stand out. Can you share with us the challenges you had to overcome to get to where you are at today?
I am constantly reminding my clients “If it was easy, everyone would do it”. The same holds true here. It has not been a smooth road. Rebranding and molding a pre-existing business to show my passion and personality has its own challenges. Most of my struggles have come from learning the technology that goes on behind the scenes of running and growing a gym, as well as how to market ourselves to the public. We live in a very health conscious community and because of this we have seen a huge growth in boutique fitness studios pop up overall over the Southbay in the last five years. With a lot of gyms to choose from we need to be able to stand out and be seen for the unique studio that we are.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Unlimited Fitness story. Who are your clients? What type of workouts do you offer?
We are a Small Group Personal Training studio located two blocks from the beach at the border of Hermosa and Manhattan Beach. Driving down Manhattan Ave, you can’t miss the bright green exterior of our little studio. We are known for one of the most challenging and efficient workouts in town. Every class is a 55-minute full-body, heart-pumping workout incorporating circuit training with strength and cardio component. Our workouts are created and lead by Certified Personal Trainers, each with extensive and unique fitness backgrounds. They design the workouts each day with their own personal touch, so you never know what you are about to walk in to and very possibly will do movements you have never done before. The trainers are able to modify for fitness levels and accommodate for injuries. We welcome all levels, whether you are brand new to working out or a semi-pro or professional athlete, and anyone in between, we will deliver a safe and challenging workout for you. Age is only a number at our studio and our client’s range in age anywhere from 15 years to 80 years young. This is where you come to get stronger, move better, and get results.

Each workout is a maximum of 16 people, small enough that members can still get individual attention while in a fun and exciting community dynamic. With 66 workouts a week, its hard to come up with an excuse to miss a class: 11 classes each day Monday through Friday and five classes on Saturday and Sunday. Come check us out, we offer three free workouts to see if we are the right fit for you.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Good luck has played a huge role in my business and life. For example nine years ago, I was working out a gym called Unlimited Fitness two blocks from the beach. I said to myself “how cool would it be to own this place and live right here”. Seven years later, my husband was transferred for work to sunny California. Two years after our move we had the opportunity to buy the gym I had always loved when I was visiting. Now we live down the street from the gym and we are living our best life. I am not sure you can get more lucky than that?
