Meet Kristie Reeves of Songlines Film and BU Media Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristie Reeves.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I came to Los Angeles in the fall of 2000 with the dream of becoming an actress, started attending a three year degree acting academy while going out for jobs. I booked some really fun things (working on TV shows such as “The Division” and “Las Vegas” as well as dancing for Jennifer Lopez), but didn’t really feel satisfied. I also felt quite frustrated with the roles I was going out for. When talking about this with one of my acting coaches he said to me “Stop complaining and start becoming pro-active. If you don’t like what you’re going out for, then start creating your own content”. I ended up working at his production company assisting the main producer and learning everything about production that I could, and really fell in love with it. It lead to me getting hired by a feature film company working on some incredible projects and producing the film “Two Oranges and a Lemon” which has scored two nominations and has been the official selection of more than 25 film festivals.

I also always had a passion to do something that would have a positive impact in the world. This opportunity came with the docu series “The Children of the Rainbow” of which I am the head producer and also do the interviews for. The series is all about resources to provide support for the next generation of children in order for them to thrive. Our motto is “Changing the world by changing the way we raise our children!”

I also started a radio/TV show earlier this year called “Rebel Hearts w/ Kristie Reeves”- empowering the rebels of the world. The show is conversations with change makers and paradigm shifters to inspire you to become the change you want to see in the world.

Much of what contributed to help me get to where I am right now is never giving up, constantly learning something new and the power of positive thinking.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working in film production is seldom a smooth road; due to the energy of the business you can never guarantee an exact return on investments and unless you are an established producer investors tend to be hesitant to put money into your business.

When I was working in feature film production, we ran exactly into that obstacle and after years of working really hard were finally able to bring in an investor through one of our collaborators. We had packaged the projects, had amazing stars attached, award winning departments heads as well as casting, the bank had given us an LOI to advance the tax returns and we were gearing up to start filming before the end of the year.

The company was right in the middle of negotiating the contracts with the investors when the market crash happened and all monies were put pulled out from underneath the investment company. It was such a disappointment how after all this time and work the project ended up falling through.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Songlines Film and BU Media Productions – what should we know?
Our company creates conscious media. It really is about telling stories and/or providing information to create a better tomorrow. Our content is about empowering people and to show them what is possible.

We create shows such as “The Children of the Rainbow” where we interview experts in their field, gathering resources for parents, educators and anyone else who works with children in order to help children thrive thriving children have the power to change the world and we are all about that.

“Rebel Hearts w/ Kristie Reeves” is another show that we produce (it is being distributed by Universal Broadcasting Network) and again, it is all about self-empowerment, inspiration. It is asking people to become the change they want to see in the world and telling them that we are the ones we have been waiting for.

Yes, our projects are entertaining and fun, but they also provide inspiration, motivation and resources to create change in the world. We believe in the strong impact that media has in the world and are using it for positive change.

We also believe in the power of collaboration and working with others who have that same vision.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Positive thinking.

Having a vision of what is possible.

Always learning something new.

Communication, kindness and knowing when to say yes and when to say no.

Thinking outside the box, or be like Walt Disney who didn’t believe there was a box there in the first place.
