Meet Kjord Davis of INDIGO LAB LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kjord Davis.

Kjord, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. From an early age, I sensed there was something greater than myself, something “out there.” Growing up, I was fascinated by the stars and often found myself gazing up at vast nighttime sky with wonderment. From an early age, I felt a deep connection to spirituality and loved exploring the various spaces those feelings took me. I left Utah and my family to move to Los Angeles. As time had it, 9/11 happened a week before I was moving to California. Being unsure of what the future held for myself, the country and the state of the world I decided to embark on a personal journey to find out what lied outside my childhood comfort zone. Los Angeles presented opportunities for personal success, leadership roles, and promotions in corporate America.

I attended my first Kundalini Yoga class at a local gym. The practice teaches one to close their eyes and move in very strange postures for what seemed like very long and excruciating periods of time. Then, coming to complete stillness to observe and breathe in the peace and calm. It was in one of those moments of stillness, with my physical eyes closed, my third eye saw my 5-year-old self sitting in front of me at the other end of my mat. Though a child, he was a radiant king, a stranger, yet familiar. Emotion welled up from deep within my body and soul. Tears rolled down my cheeks for what seemed like hours. I connected with the innocence and wisdom in his truthful eyes, and that is when I knew, I had been running and hiding my entire life. But I didn’t really know what am I running and hiding from? This was the beginning of my journey…

I continued attending Kundalini class. After a few months diving into the practice, I decided I wanted to investigate more about how this yoga delivered me home to personal awareness and enlightenment about my life. I enrolled in a teacher training course, so I could deepen my level of understanding. During the nine-month rebirthing of the training program, I felt a calling to share this yoga of awareness with others. Through the mental, spiritual and physical journey I began to have a vision of a unique way to share my experience. With the support of my best friend Darcy Manav and my partner Peter Nguyen, we were inspired to open our own unique kind of yoga studio. The intention of our studio was to create an atmosphere where people could heal and have an opportunity to re-connect with their personal sense of power and reclaim and remember their innocence, the same way I had when I sat on my mat and saw my 5-year-old self.

After much deliberation, we named our studio Indigo. Indigo is the color of the 6th chakra, the seat of intuition, the “cockpit” of the soul. We nurtured and created a beautiful studio. Indigo hosted many one of a kind, events and created a wonderful community. Many of that community continue following us to the various classes, workshops, and retreats we host and participate in around the country. My life’s passion and mission are to continue to curate experiences for people individually and collectively to remember, reconnect and reclaim, to find a purpose-their purpose or to at least create space for more personal AHA moments!!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Has it been a “Smooth Road”? HA! I have learned, it’s never a smooth road when you’re the one paving it! Indigo was a created from the hearts of my partners and myself.

Deciding on the name was a challenge itself. Then deciding on what we wanted the physical design to be was another process. I felt marginalized growing up — a gay boy in SLC Utah I couldn’t have been more out of place. I felt on the outskirts of a majority belief system that did not include me, and I was left feeling that I wanted something more. This was my greatest gift. I believe I have been blessed with the ability to find perspective in challenging situations. This has been the driving force in my life.

Regardless of what challenges have come my way, I have always believed I would persevere. This is the message of the Kundalini practice – to find a way through every block. To draw upon ones creative force so wake up in the dream and realize we have all the tools we need. I have found MY own way in life. Sometimes it feels like a highway sometimes feels like traversing the Himalayas. My motto: “Keep believing and achieving. Belief is the best compass to turn obstacles into opportunities!”

INDIGO LAB LA – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Indigo Lab is an inclusive health and wellness brand that utilizes and alchemizes sister sciences to navigate the pressures and stressors of our times. Indigo started as a brick and mortar and has become a space for personal growth.

Each Indigo hosted event infuses yoga, meditation, astrology, sound-scape, sound healing and more to connect participants back to their source and deepest part of their soul. All of our classes, workshops, and retreats are carefully curated to release stress, strengthen vitality, garner a sense of community and provide joy and healing for those who are looking for a place to belong and connect.

My favorite thing to do is one on one session. I love being in the field of a client to understand energetically whats in the field. Much of disease lies beyond the physical body. It gives me such joy to curate sessions and programs specific to one’s lifestyle. Sourcing the tools necessary to live with deeper connections, increased states of relaxation, and artfully co-creating the life of their dreams.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I love setting goals and am often surprised by the end result. I love to see the goal going beyond what I originally thought possible. Even “failure” offers perspective and activation necessary to pivot focused energy. These pivotal moments contain the energy necessary to crack open the seeds of success. I am drawn to people, process and a journey of self-awareness, this has often guided me to take leadership roles.

There is strength in numbers and when one rises everyone rises. Each person has their own perspective, unique to them that can really shift a group collective. I believe this is the most powerful influence to the shift necessary for the thriving of our planet. Whether it be myself, my clients, colleagues or employees, I source out core strengths and amplify those strengths to leverage limitations.

It’s really about pushing beyond the comfort zone that ultimately achieves what is possible beyond the limits of our own mind. My passion is helping others take their breakdowns and turn them into breakthroughs. This is possible for everyone. I often refer to myself, half-jokingly, as a transformation artist: the true journey of my life has been transforming places, spaces, and faces. It brings me the greatest joy!

Success to me is when I know a goal has been exceeded, a perspective has shifted, and another life has been changed for the better.
