Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimmy Shields.
Kimmy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m born and raised in Torrance, California and currently reside in beautiful Burbank. I grew up performing on the stage and came to love it so much that I received my BFA in Musical Theater from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, graduating in 2014. Coming out of college, my focus shifted to pursuits in Commercial, Television, and Film roles. My most notable role to date is that of Nonnie Thompson on Netflix’s INSATIABLE. Some other credits include recurring characters on HBO’s BIG LITTLE LIES, Netflix’s GIRLBOSS, and a brief appearance in 20th Century Fox’s AD ASTRA. I love storytelling with all my heart and am so grateful that my life is colored with these opportunities to perform. My goal is to only get better with time in order to let people feel like they have a soft place to land when they watch my work. When I’m not performing, you will probably find me roller skating, seeing as many movies as possible (with an emphasis on Horror), or volunteering with Meals on Wheels.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has and it hasn’t. I’m very aware of the ways in which fortune has smiled on me in terms of the type of work I’ve gotten in such a short period of time. But I definitely struggle. I’ve battled anxiety and depression almost all my life, so there are days when getting out of bed is a challenge in itself, let alone trying to manufacture energy for an audition or a meeting. I am no stranger to getting sucked down the vortex of Instagram and comparing my insides to someone’s gloriously successful outsides. Thankfully, I’ve been back to therapy and am putting a lot of work into creating a stronger foundation in my head and heart. It’s helping put a lot of joy and, most importantly, hope back into my life.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am an actress and singer. I am thankful and proud that people find authenticity in my work, no matter what it is. It’s hard to say what sets me apart because I think everyone has their own magic that they bring to the table. I think my body of work would suggest that I’m malleable. I’ve been labeled an “old soul,” which I find reflected in my passion for and knowledge of old Hollywood. Genetically, I think my face lends itself to vintage-inspired pieces, but my low-maintenance personality keeps me grounded in modern roles.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Hollywood is Hollywood! I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else pursuing this. New York is a great hub, but LA will always be my home. I think if you want to perform, this a great place to be. However, technology has allowed us a tremendous new level of access that you can really shine from anywhere in the world.
