Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Manning.
Hi Kim, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born on a dirt road in small-town Oklahoma. With nothing much more to do than Rollerskate, so I started at three. With great ambitions of being an Olympian, I became a state and regional artistic rollerskater by the age of 17 at which point I switch my focus to my budding enthusiasm for music, dance and acting. After graduating with a BFA in music theater, I began touring the country with George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic where I began to integrate my love for music with rollerskating. Singing and skating at the same time I was able to tour all over the world, fill two passports, and perform on many major TV events. In recent years I have turned my focus high-flying stunt performances on rollerskates, teaching rollerskating on social media, and creating my solo music with Producer G Koop as well as writing and self-producing Rollerskate safety songs.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am forever grateful to be adopted into the Funkadelic Family. The journey of understanding other’s cultures was shocking at first and I can’t express enough my gratitude for the people who shared their story with me. When I left Oklahoma, I had $200 in my pocket with no fallbacks. Had it not been for George taking me in I would prob not have survived. Then being a female musician in a man’s world was more like swimming upstream. Not only does everyone assume you don’t know how to set up your own gear but there is also a pervasive spirit of taking advantage of women in the music industry. The pervasive encouragement of the pioneering spirit of my drag race car-driving mom kept me going I guess. Until I couldn’t anymore and moved my focus to skating and social media content creation. I miss music deeply and hope to get the energy to make another go at it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
