Meet Kimberly Butchko

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Butchko.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
When I was a teenager I thought I wanted to do something creative, I spent hours drawing on an old drafting table. While in college, I worked as a legal secretary. After 4 years, I knew I needed to get into a creative field. My journey began with visual merchandising in home and decorative accessory stores. Then a dear friend asked me to re-decorate a room for her. She was so thrilled with the outcome and encouraged me to pursue interior design. Then I got my big break, (after a year and a half of dropping my resume off at a model home firm I wanted to be a part of) an Accessory Designer position opened up – my dream job. I worked my way up to Interior Designer and was a part of the model home community for a decade, even winning an award for best design on one of my models. After that, I consulted off and on for home owners while raising my daughter. About 3 years ago I decided to start my own business, and it’s been a wonderful experience. I’ve had the pleasure of walking my clients through the experience of making a house their home. In addition I had the opportunity to work on a spectacular custom built spec estate. I love creating beautiful spaces, whether they’re warm and inviting, funky and energetic – this job never gets boring.

Please tell us about your art.
As an interior designer, I create spaces. My inspiration and goal is to create harmony between the client’s style, functionality of the space and good design. When my client walks into their home, I want them to feel connected to their environment. It should reflect who they are and inspire them at the same time.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
To believe in yourself and not let fear get in the way. Be proactive in your own life, it takes work to achieve your dreams. Also, find a mentor. They can impart so much wisdom and inspiration.

I wish I had learned earlier to ignore the fear, because once I pushed past it, amazing opportunities opened up for me.
