Meet Kim Etheredge of Mixed Chicks in San Fernando Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Etheredge.

Even with 2,448 miles between them –Growing up in Los Angeles, Kim Etheredge was able to find her ‘mixed chicks’ partner, New Jersey native Wendi Levy, with whom she joined forces to create the product that would solve both their untamed locks. Both biracial (Etheredge’s mother is Irish and her father is Black American; Levy’s mother is Black American and her father is Jewish), the two became friends sharing stories and hardships on finding hair products that worked for them, combining all types of products to make sure their curls were moisturized and tamed. Years of mixing products to make the perfect blend, eventually the business venture was born.

Once the Mixed Chicks formula was conceived, tested and approved by friends and family everyone encouraged them to share their products with others. Wendi and Kim launched a web-based business in 2004 with a startup investment of $10,000 of their own money and no investors, and before long the two were running a full-blown business, providing a solution to men, women and children’s hair needs around the world! Mixed Chicks products include Shampoos, Conditioners, Detanglers, Style and Control, Gloss and Shine, Thermal Protection, Men’s Care, a Children’s line and accessories.

Still selling their products from their web-based business www.mixedchicks.net and distribution has expanded to being sold in over 8000 retail outlets across the nation, UK, Caribbean, and Europe, and are a celebrity favorite of such stars as Halle Berry, Jennifer Hudson, Bernadette Peters and many more.

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting and running a business is not the easiest thing to do but it has been very rewarding. When creating formulas, you want to make sure they “work well” for most and when choosing your packaging materials, you have to be able to meet minimum purchases or figure out how to get what is needed on your budget.

Although these can be obstacles, overcoming and succeeding is the payout!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mixed Chicks – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Mixed Chicks was launched by two “mixed chicks” on a mission to create a product line to meet the unique demands of the multicultural woman. They’ve turned a dream into a reality, providing women of different ethnicities with hair care and makeup products that embrace and celebrate their diversity.

Our products are used by all women. We are very proud of that statement because the industry unfortunately is still very segregated by skin color instead of texture. Hair is hair not a race or color so we are very proud to be the only line that really represents women, men and children from all backgrounds.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
There’s no better place to have grown up and call home than L.A. Sun, fun, the ocean, great temperature and snow on the mountain all on the same day? It just doesn’t get any better than that!
