Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiara Cooper.
Kiara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am originally from Baltimore, MD, where I worked as a pediatric nurse at one of the most prestigious hospitals in the country, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. I always knew deep down that while Baltimore was home, I desperately craved some new scenery (and weather!). I visited LA for the first time with my now husband and toddler, and literally fell in love instantly. We only had a few days to vacation, and I felt so moved during that time I walked into a major hospital, and basically had them interview me on the spot. Three short months later, I found myself packing up my newly purchased home, and relocating my family 3,000 miles away to LA; talk about spur of the moment decisions! While acclimating to my new found home, I began to realize that while I loved the field of nursing and helping others, the politics of working in the hospital made it feel more like a job than my passion, and I started to seek out other ways to use my people skills. I stumbled across a Real Estate course that was starting at Keller Williams, and there started my journey into becoming a Realtor. Five months and a few closed deals later, I am SO happy with where things are and excited to see what the future holds.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Does anyone actually ever say yes? Lol. I think it starts back with the birth of our son, who was born almost four months early (at 24 weeks). That experience threw my entire family for a major loop, as we watched him battle for his life for 4 months in the hospital. Though he is pretty healthy now, he does still have a few special needs, which still makes for some obstacles today. Infants and toddlers are already pretty time and money consuming, but when you add the medical complexity, you also introduce more doctor visits, bills, etc., which can be overwhelming. Thankfully, my husband and I have an amazing support system that has been there with us from day one.
Moving to LA was actually a smoother process than anticipated, but still hard to be so far away from most of our family and friends. Transitioning from being a full-time RN to a full-time Realtor also had its own challenges, from trying to find a good broker to work with, to finding a niche that works for you. There’s also the major financial adjustment of going from a stable, predictable income, to not being sure where your next check is coming from. I could probably continue with more, but truly these “obstacles” all worked out for the better when you look at the big picture. Everything that happens TO us is actually happening FOR us. Learning how to adjust your mindset is crucial for making it out of life’s tough times.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am currently a Realtor in the Los Angeles area, focusing mostly on the South LA and West Hollywood areas. I am signed with an absolutely amazing brokerage, SGE Realty, which specializes in vacation and luxury rentals. We work with everyone; from buyers to sellers, commercial to residential, we service them all! We focus on providing each of our clients with the ultimate luxury experience while working hard and negotiating on their behalf. What sets us apart from others is our genuine passion for what we do. Our number one goal is ALWAYS to have our clients’ best interests at heart and keep a tenacious and determined attitude to get the job done. The real estate industry can be quite difficult and “cut-throat” to break into, but I’ve been able to collaborate with some other amazing agents, lenders, and other vendors that have helped make the transition a bit easier. Staying true to myself is my tagline; no one can do what I do quite how I do it 😉
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I like to say there is no luck, there is fate and what you manifest. I try to be very intentional about what I seek for my life, and truly believe that we have the power to steer our “luck” in any direction we choose, with our mindsets and behavior patterns.
