Meet Kia Torrence of Diamond Creation’z in Whittier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kia Torrence.

Kia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After 20 years in the Customer service field, I finally followed my path to Cosmetology school. After finishing and passing licensing, I looked for employment for a month in my surrounding area with no call backs. Finally, after visiting a local beauty supply, my aunt spoke highly of me to the owner and numbers were exchanged. She called me that same week to begin employment. I was there for about 6 months when presented with the opportunity to work at Veenus Beauty Lounge and alongside Moe Hair Gold in the Love and Peace Festival in Cairo Egypt. After a year it was finally time to fulfill my 3rd year goal of opening my own salon. Presented with a chance to begin At Phoenix Salon Suites in Whittier, the past few months have been very promising and exciting.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This was not an easy task, the transition from a commission stylist, to a booth renter, to now a salon owner was a very scary move. Not knowing if my clientele would grow or even if my clients would follow was always in the back of my mind. But faith and determination along with trust in my skills and service have brought me to this stage in my life.

Please tell us about Diamond Creation’z .
I am a sole owner and stylist of Diamond Creation’z. I specialize in braids and hair extension installation along with aiding in the growth and protection of my client’s natural hair. I am known for braids mostly as can be seen worn by local musicians and models. For a Holiday event held in December, I personally braided 27 clients back to back in just a few hours. What separates me from other salons and stylist is 1 great location, I am the closest hair braiding and expressionist to the surrounding area, I give my clients great service as well as education on maintaining their hair. Along with an ear to listen and help when needed.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory was when my grandmother would take me to the salon to get my hair done on Saturday mornings. Watching all the ladies get their hair done and the smells was always something that attracted my attention.
