Today we’d like to introduce you to Keyi & Silky.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, it all started when a little California girl found herself at the height of accomplishing an amazing dream that would land her 3,000 miles away from home in the big country city of Nashville, TN. After a 3 year fulfillment this gutsy, lovable, charismatic Cali girl, Ms. Shavonn a.k.a., Silky, found herself eager to move back to her hometown to expand her entertainment dreams but before she could do so, she met this charming and ever so handsome country gentleman by the name of Keyi at a bowling alley. Despite there meeting place, they found that their roads were parallel in both their fields of interests and goals alike.
Fast forward through the formation of a music duo/ group, a 2007 wedding, the start of a non-profit organization dedicated to stopping bullying, a new baby girl born on New Year’s Eve of 2017, achievements for community service honored by Magic Johnson Foundation, NAACP, National Children’s Association, Boys & Girls Club of America, recognition of talent by BET.com, TV Guide Channel, and numerous supporting act slots at concerts, festivals, and performances all around the world.
When it comes to indie music duo’s, this powerhouse couple can’t be denied. Armed with custom and gold spiked out costumes, with matching spiked out masks for each outfit seemingly shows their edgy creativity that has definitely made them a popularly recognized group in Los Angeles and surrounding cities through the coastal region of Southern California. As the rapper of the group, Silky carries a smooth tone that glides right into the rhythm creating a perfect lyrical deliver to each track that is organized and produced by her husband and groupmate Keyi, the melodically talented and soulful harmonizing southern songbird. Their sound is unlike anything that has been heard before but is so comfortably familiar in a 90’s music feels good kind of way.
“To get to where we are today, it took immense passion, belief, insane dedication, determination, focus, and the investment of time and money in ourselves.” – You simply have to love what you’re doing!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road for us. There have been many struggles with being a truly talented husband and wife music group. We have faced discrimination at some venues, there have been record labels that have tried to separate us by offering solo deals, we have been asked by managers in the industry to calm our energy down in our performances for the sake of upstaging major artists, we’ve been sabotaged in live performances with “technical difficulties”, and the main struggle for us is meeting major game-changers that want to connect with us but there often turns out to be a gatekeeper that has every excuse as to why they can’t put us through to the person that suggested we keep in touch in the first place.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about KNS ROCKSTAR – what should we know?
Not only is KNS ROCKSTAR a music group that is known for their incredibly customized outfits and masks, but we are the founders of the We Busy movement who has partnered with Walmart to launch our Anti-Bullying clothing line on Walmart.com, and we are the creators of the Stop The Bullying Motivational School Tour & Program which travels throughout Los Angeles and the Southern Coast to spread positive messages to students in California. We are most proud of our many awards over the years for being an influential and uplifting family-oriented music group to our youth in surrounding communities.
