Meet Kevin and Amy Mattison of Hot Yoga 1000 in Newbury Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin and Amy Mattison.

Hot Yoga 1000 is the brain child of Kevin & Amy Mattison. They literally spent nearly a decade formulating their venture in their minds and on paper. Kevin & Amy allocated themselves 2-months beginning in July 2012 to drive across the country visiting Hatha Yoga studios in numerous towns and cities to establish a ‘pulse’ that would ultimately guide selection of a location to establish their business in the Yoga industry. After arriving in San Diego, living and teaching in Petaluma, and finally settling down to teach in Santa Barbara, they we able to capitalize on a studio location opportunity in Newbury Park. “We conceptualized the yOMa Center, LLC over 10-years ago. The yOMa Center is the parent company to our Hatha Yoga Studio / School that we’ve named Hot Yoga 1000.”

Hot Yoga 1000, located in Newbury Park, California, adjacent to Thousand Oaks, gets its name from our method of employing heat in the Yoga practice, and our location in the Thousand Oaks vicinity: 1000 calories, 1000 breaths, 1000 Oaks! Hot Yoga 1000’s cOMmUNITY of Yoginis and Yogis make the Studio / School what it is today; a fantastic place to enjoy yourself even if you’re just dropping by to hang out in the lobby and say hello!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We do not know if we’ve traveled a smooth road or not, having never done this before! We have absolutely nothing to compare the experience to. Yes, of course there were what can be considered struggles, but, we forged ahead and followed our business plan and our passion. We commuted from Santa Barbara to Newbury Park for 7-months and taught classes beginning at 6:00am ending at 8:00pm. Although the classes began at 6am and ended at 8pm, the ‘back office’ work associated with supporting those classes and clients, was always required before and after the doors opened. Hot Yoga 1000 has consistently been staffed by high quality, professional, Instructors that continue to play a major role in ensuring client satisfaction. We also faced skepticism, caution, and a sometimes wary market because of our method for providing Hatha Yoga services. Many, would be clients, were and perhaps still are concerned about our employment of heat to facilitate more extensive health benefits from our Yoga methodology.

Hot Yoga 1000 – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a Hatha Yoga Studio or School specializing in the Ghosh / Choudhury, 26n2 method of Hatha Yoga. This method employs an environmentally controlled practice room (104-105 degrees Fahrenheit / 38-40% relative humidity), an empirically tested and established 90-minute sequence of asanas (postures or poses) that has consistently provided holistically efficacious results with respect to the overall health of the participants. The number one objective of our practice is ‘Optimal Health’ and the associated ‘Enhanced Human Performance!’ Although ‘Fitness’ is important, it is a welcome, yet secondary benefit of our activity. Physical, mental, and energetic health, is a more prominent benefit from our practice but we do not ignore the fact that fitness is an inherent piece of this optimal health oriented Hatha Yoga. You can be ‘fit’ and not healthy, but you cannot be ‘healthy’ unless you are fit! This aspect of our methodology sets us apart from other American style Yoga schools or studios. We are most proud of our cadre of Instructors. Most of them completed a 9-week, immersion training program accomplishing two 90-minute classes per day in the ‘hot room’, Monday through Friday, and a single class on Saturday. In between the asana classes, our instructors studied anatomy / physiology, Yogic and East Indian philosophy / history, Yoga Class Leadership, Yoga Therapy Research results, etc.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career was when one of our clients attributed conception and the birth of a healthy child to her Yoga practice at Hot Yoga 1000.
