Meet Kevin DeGeorge of Sunnect Lighting in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin DeGeorge.

Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The story behind my business is very likely similar to many others who have decided to start a business. You work for someone else year after year and then finally decide one day that you could do what you do so much better if you were able to make your own decisions. I can’t say what it was exactly that triggered me to quit my career job, but one day about 5 years ago, I decided that it was time. I knew that in order to be successful that my business needed a resume. For the first few years, it was all about building not only a resume but a good reputation to go along with it. Over 100 projects later, I have found myself with a business that is both viable and one that has good prospects for making it over the long haul.

Has it been a smooth road?
Finding and keeping good employees has been the biggest struggle. Not everyone is born with the sense of what motivates people to work hard and care about what they do. I do not enjoy hiring people and especially don’t enjoy having to let people go. I have become better at it over the years, but my sense is that it will always be a process of trial and error.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Sunnect Lighting specializes in commercial LED retrofits. What this equates to is seeking out businesses that don’t typically realize how much energy their old lighting uses and showing them all of the economics behind what LED lighting can do for them. Showing a customer how much money they can save on their electric bill is sometimes a challenge because the savings are so great that they have a hard time believing it. These savings equate to payback periods for their projects that are so quick, that the projects usually sell themselves. We get the most satisfaction going back to the customer in the months after the projects are complete and showing them the hard proof of how well their new lighting systems are working and how much energy they are saving.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is a great place to do business because there is so much going on here. There exists a huge variety of customers and the market is vast and full of opportunity. There is so much opportunity, in fact, that this alone can often times be overwhelming for new business owners. Figuring out who to market to and who your best customers are is often very challenging. I would much prefer this environment, however, than to be located in an area that is limiting due to its smaller size. I am born and raised in LA, so for me, this is where I am best suited to make it happen.
