Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenta Seki.
Kenta, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in the city of San Gabriel and my career in the fitness industry began when I fell in love with Yoga when I was about 9 years old. I thought it looked cool and started practicing it all the time and even made it focus on my High School Senior Project.
When I turned 16, I became a Yoga instructor and started teaching classes at gyms. Being around all the gym equipment got me interested in general fitness and I soon became a certified personal trainer as well.
When I was 22, I got noticed by a model scout and was brought into fitness modeling and was fortunate to book many huge projects with some of the fitness industry’s leading brands.
I became most known for my work with fitness icon Jillian Michaels, who referred to me as her protégé. I am prominently featured in many of her DVDs and work closely with her on many of her projects.
To date, I have been featured in over 100 fitness DVDs! I’ve been very fortunate train many accomplished celebrity clients and have over 125,000 followers on my social media platforms.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The fitness industry can be a very intimidating place. There are so many really fit and good-looking people, that it becomes easy to feel like you’re not good enough. At the beginning of my career, I even held out on personal training because I thought I wasn’t as fit as the other trainers at my gym! It wasn’t until I pushed myself to apply and started training that I realized it’s actually more about your personality and people skills than it is about your looks.
This lesson crossed over into fitness modeling, where I realized self-confidence makes a good model. Having faith in my abilities and love for myself is what keeps me going and has helped me come as far as I have.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the fitness story. Tell us more about the business.
I now have my hands in many areas of the fitness industry. In addition to training individual clients and occasionally teaching group classes, I also have my own line of workout videos and fitness challenges available on my website.
My Yoga background gave me a great foundation of bodily awareness and exercise form, and really helped my understanding of how the body works. Now, one of the most common compliments I receive is how good my form is! This enabled me to give direction fairly well, so recently, I partnered with the #1 Audio Workout app Aaptiv, where I lead users through audio-only workouts.
I’m also a Master Trainer for several fitness companies and travel around the world certifying other personal trainers and group fitness instructors in different programs.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe the harder you work, the luckier you get, timing and location have helped me a lot, but nothing replaces hard work when it comes to getting further in life!
