Meet Kennie Zhou

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennie Zhou.

Kennie Zhou

Hi Kennie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started working in the film/media industry as an intern at Vice China, recommended by some friends who I met through the underground club scene in Beijing. That experience helped me get a job as a coordinator at a NY/LA bicoastal production company called Good Company, where I later on worked as a studio manager and producer. Then, I decided to leave the company and freelance in the film, music video, and commercial production world, mostly as a producer, which is what I do today! I’ve been lucky to have held through the strike and started working with bigger clients as I move forward.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Relatively smooth, but there have definitely been challenges. Working independently is never easy – it requires self-discipline and motivation. I learned to spend time on my passion projects when things are slow and to compartmentalize my time and energy when things are super busy.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a creative producer as well as a video and performance artist. My producing work ranges from music videos to TV series, from indie shorts to commercials. I try to be not only considerate in terms of logistics but also consult on creative aspects in my projects. My personal artistic projects are something that allow me to express myself through other media and keep my creative flow going.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the COVID-19 crisis?
It was the determining factor that pushed me to focus on digital media like film. I come from a live performance and theatre background but always wanted to work in film. COVID pushed me to not wait!
