Meet Kendra Losee of Mota Marketing in San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Losee.

Kendra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Some people come to entrepreneurship naturally, while others will do everything they can to ignore the signs. I was one of the latter – until spring 2016 when I was laid off twice within a few months – making a career total of six layoffs. Always a risk-taker, spending much of my career in more cutting-edge industries, the time had come to reassess my decisions. Clearly, it was a sign I couldn’t ignore any longer, it was time to take the risk and bet on myself.

My first marketing client was a medical cannabis company. Little did I know that it was the spark that ignited my new career directly. As I worked to educate myself on the regulations of marketing cannabis, I began to connect with an amazing community of cannabis business owners and entrepreneurs.

As a marketing strategist, it is essential to help brands be recognized, remembered, and recommended. I strive to help my clients accelerate their growth. Today, I’m proud to say I work with universities, financial services companies, and cannabis, and hemp CBD, I work closely with brands to streamline their marketing, create innovative campaigns, and excel at creating essential customer connections.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Entrepreneurship is definitely not a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges I faced in the very beginning was the transition from marketing executive positions and having a full-team to support me, to having to do everything myself. It was a challenge to relearn everything I hadn’t done in years. Every second I wasn’t working on clients, I was trying to learn – podcasts, videos, webinars, classes, you name it, I tried to master it. Unfortunately, this isn’t sustainable for long.

Once I took a step back and started to focus on my “zone of genius”, that’s when things started to click into place. Using my network, I’m able to bring in subcontractors on projects as needed. This gives me a chance to rely on others who are all experts in their own area. It also gives me time to teach and work on building out courses to reach more business owners.

There are always days that imposter syndrome threatens to slide in, or clients have emergencies, but never have I regretted my decision. It is scary being single and striking out on my own with no parachute to save me, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. This is what I love doing and the more businesses I can help stand out and grow, and the more students I can teach, the happier I am.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mota Marketing – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a marketing strategist who excels at helping businesses stand out and grow. With a focus on digital marketing, I specialize in turning convention on its head to push boundaries when it comes to campaigns and technology. With my experience and MBA, I’m the marketer who has an eye on the entire business, focusing on the goals at hand.

There are two sides of my digital marketing agency. The first, Fueled Marketing is the more “traditional” side of my business. My clients tend to be more conservative in somewhat regulated industries like higher education and financial services. The other side of my agency, Mota Marketing, focuses specifically on Cannabis and Hemp CBD. With Mota Marketing, I help companies establish their brand, identify and target their customers, and develop marketing and social media strategies. From strategy to implementation, our focus is on the larger business goals.

In addition, I’m the host of Cannabis Marketing Live, All Puff, No Fluff (TM), a Facebook live show. It’s on the third year and it has given me a chance to interview people throughout the cannabis and hemp CBD space.

Lastly, I’m getting ready to launch, MOTAvate Your Market, a guided DIY marketing lab for CBD entrepreneurs. Using my experience as an adjunct marketing professor at several universities it will give me a chance to help entrepreneurs accelerate their businesses growth without the cost of hiring consultants.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
There are so many ideas! Short-term, I’ll be launching the MOTAvate your Market marketing lab for CBD entrepreneurs by the time summer starts. There’s a book in the works for people new to the CBD space, and I’m working on turning my Facebook live show into a podcast. My goal is to continue to expand the educational side of my business.

Right now, it’s making sure companies are prepared to pivot as needed and get the marketing expertise they need. Life is too short to let business owners rely on bad marketing advice that could impact their business.

The important thing to me is to stay ahead of the curve and focus on helping businesses reach their audience in these changing times. So from helping businesses master social media and increase their use of video to conducting marketing workshops and creating interactive events, the sky is the limit.
