Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Giraldi.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Common Rituals really sprouted from a love of makeup as a teenager. I have been in the beauty industry for 19 years, and it all started with a love of glamour liner. Makeup had been just hobby, I was clueless it could be a career until I landed in Los Angeles in 2007, I attended a makeup up school to learn special FX and I eventually ended up teaching there. Being in Los Angeles, opened my eyes to the world of wellness and skincare, the SoCal/LA lifestyle is very different than where I grew up in Michigan. In LA you are surrounded by those whose job is to look their best and be their fittest, it’s easy to join in. My thirst for knowledge leads me to more beauty school in which I got my esthetician license. Wellness and skincare took over my brain and I kept diving deeper into it all, at one point, I even taught spin classes. I’ve been doing facials in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills for 8 years and I obsessively read about all things wellness, beauty, and skincare. Fast forward to 2016 and I’m mixing ingredients in my kitchen, creating wacky earthy masks for me and my girlfriends. Finally, it hatched into a business, Common Rituals.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Sometimes, you catch a smooth curve, and other times it is all madness. Who doesn’t have struggles and stress about work and business? But it also has been super fun, nerve-wracking, made me feel crazy vulnerable and raw, proud and excited. I feel like the actual product in the bottles came a bit easier to me than the departments, I touch feel and apply products to people every day. It was the accounting, website building ( thank goddess for square space!) Branding, marketing, etc. that was a harder shift in my brain. I felt like I triple checked everything, over and over cause that part of the business is so foreign to me, and still managed to print labels with mis-spelling at one point. Communication sometimes isn’t my strong suit, hello Throat Chakra, so I learned I need to slow down when I am trying to communicate. I have so much more to figure out and learn, I have to view the lesson in each Fluff Up that comes along. I think it’s also a struggle to be your biggest cheerleader sometimes, but hey, if you don’t show yourself some love, who else will?!
Common Rituals – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Common Rituals provides organic and natural skincare and eco-friendly ritual items for your wellness needs. We are skincare for a cause, a portion of each sale goes to uplifting organizations. More and more people are paying more attention to what they are putting in and on their bodies and I’m proud to bring them healthy options that benefit them and benefit others from our donations.
I think consumers find it important on what a business stands for as well as what’s inside the bottle. We make it clear that we are empowering change with each sale. As for our stand out products, our Organic +Ayurvedic powder masks are definitely different, super earthy. Don’t expect the scent of roses and lavender to surround you in these skin rituals but expect results. No added ingredients only active ingredients.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment is that I took a leap. I took a risk on what I believe in and what I want to give back to the world. What’s the worst that could happen?
