Meet Kendall Hale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendall Hale.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was really into cartoons and comics as a kid, I was always drawing dinosaurs and monsters. Even at church. Especially at church. It was the only way I could get through the sermons. Drawing became my way of coping with boredom, fear, and the unknown, but I mostly just got a kick out of peoples’ reactions to what I drew. I was lucky enough to get commissions and jobs throughout college where I could do art to pay for my expenses, ranging from video game design to drawing caricatures at parties. These days I mainly work in publishing or animation, but I still try and find time to do personal sketches and cartoons when I can.

Please tell us about your art.
I mostly just goof around and try to draw something that will make people laugh. Because if you can make people laugh, they will usually like you. And I want people to like me. I need people to like me. I’m a sad, lonely boy and I crave validation.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
If you want to spend your time being pissed about events that happen, there’s art for that, sure, but it usually turns out tacky and too opinionated. I rarely let that kind of stuff affect me or what I do with my work. Life’s too short to worry about things that are out of my control and I would rather produce art that helps people escape those feelings than art that helps foster them.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Most of my stuff is digital and I post mostly on Instagram and Twitter, but sometimes Tumblr and Deviantart too when I make an occasional comic strip. Every once in a while, I’ll make a nicer piece and sell prints of it on my online store kendallhaleart.bigcartel.com.
