Meet Ken Walters of West Coast Self Storage San Pedro in Southbay and Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Walters.

Ken, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began looking for a career after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in early 90’s. My wife and I decided to finish our college degrees and moved to Washington state. I accepted an interview/position with Shurgard Storage in Seattle as a manager in training. It was an unknown career path for me but I loved the job and more importantly the people/customers. I did very well; being promoted from a manager in training to district manager until we were purchased from Public Storage in 2006. I joined the Lowe’s company in 2007 as a commercial salesman and department head with a store of the year honors. (Washington/Arizona) One day in 2010, I ran into an old friend from the storage industry (John Eisenbarth-V.P. of Operations) and we discussed a position within his “new” company ( West Coast Self Storage) as a training manager in the Seattle area. I accepted the position in March of 2011. I managed the corporate store before being offered to relocate to the California market and help break ground with training and opening new locations. We now have 3 locations in SoCal. (San Pedro/Costa Mesa/Oxnard) and 3 locations in NoCal. (San Jose/Santa Clara/Atwater) to date. Currently, I’m divorced after 19 yrs and I have two sons; 28yrs and 21yrs.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve been pretty lucky. It’s been pretty smooth. It helps to keep in contact and continue to be a “good” person and work hard!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the WEST COAST SELF STORAGE SAN PEDRO story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a self-storage company. Home Office is located in Mill Creek, WA. Our mission is to exceed our customers’ expectations, anticipate their needs, and ensure their satisfaction with the highest quality storage products and services. We specialize in customer services, innovation and quality with exceptional personnel. I’m most proud of how we make decisions and provide service with our customers in mind.

“All 10×10 units look the same but I work only for this company!” Our well-trained team members separate us from others.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would say neither good or bad. When Public Storage purchased my old company ($3.4 billion); one door closed and another door opened and we became West Coast Self Storage! Exceptional customer service and quality service; you can’t buy or steal that from us.
