Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Sweeney.
Kelly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I did a lot of musical theater and gymnastics, but when I turned ten, I heard a small dance studio near my house was opening up a dance competition team, which sounded really fun. That’s where everything really got started. By age 12, I became extremely passionate and I would train around 5 hours a day. Whether I was at the studio or at home, I was training myself in a lot of styles including contemporary, ballet, tap, lyrical, jazz, hip hop, jazz funk, and technique. I competed up until I was about 14 1/2 years old and I decided I wanted to try and dance professionally.
I am now 17 and fortunately enough since then, I have worked on networks such as NBC’s World of Dance, Nickelodeon, and ABC’s Suburgatory, movies such as The Little Rascals Save the Day, music videos for artists such as Jojo Siwa, and more. I have also ventured into the world of choreographing and aside from choreographing for a music video, musical theater plays, and high school dance teams, I just taught my first international dance class in Paris which was absolutely amazing! I have worked very hard to be where I am today, but I definitely have a lot more work and growing to do. Dance was my first love, and it is something I will always be thankful for.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being a dancer is not easy. It’s a lot of hard work, especially on your body and it’s easy to get overworked or injured. When dancing competitively, I sprained my ankle twice and had uneven hips due to stretching them so much. With rest and physical therapy, I was able to recover well and fast.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel very fortunate to live in Los Angeles because there’s a lot of professional opportunities for me to pursue out here.
