Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Moscinski.
Kelly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I honestly fell into the voiceover industry. It’s not actually something I was pursuing. In college where I got my Bachelor’s degree in Theatre and Master’s degree in English/Writing. I was doing a lot of directing for theatre at the time and had friends who worked at local radio and TV stations. It was through them that I helped find voices and really had my first taste of VO. From there, I moved out to Los Angeles to pursue a casting career in the entertainment industry. I sent out over 400 cover letters and resumes to various casting offices and casting directors offering my services as an intern or assistant. After being unemployed for a few months and applying for many more jobs (everything from retail to banking, etc.), about 4 or 5 months in, I got a call to interview with a talent agency. The interview went well, but I didn’t think I wanted to be an agent. A few days later, I got a call from Huck Liggett, the owner of The Voicecaster. I went in to interview and started right away. Within a year, I had a full time casting director position. Within 3.5 years with the company, Huck was ready to retire and came to me to ask if I was interested in buying the company. Without hesitation, I said yes! I now work full time on casting during the day as well as teach all of the workshops in the evenings.
Has it been a smooth road?
Is it ever really a smooth road? Not really. Of course, it’s been filled with ups and downs as any new adventure into business will be. It’s all about finding a balance between creativity and business as well as work and life. However, with all of the good and challenging, I’m happy to say I have a very supportive husband and family. My father passed away about a year and a half before I took over The Voicecaster, so the milestones in my life (like business-ownership) are always a difficult thing without such a close family member. But, I have the never-ending support of my mom and my brother and his family. And without my amazing husband and business partner, Travis, I’d be lost! He is truly my biggest supporter, and I’m very happy I got to drag him into this adventure with me.
The biggest struggle/obstacle with getting where I am today was simply finding a job in Los Angeles in the first place. It was a tough industry to break into. Ever since, I face challenges every day since each project we work on is different. Taking over the company it was a big challenge for me. I had managed a box office and been the manager/boss in other situations, but I was taking over a company that was already established and had always been run a certain way. I not only had to live up to the expectations of our clients, but try to better the company every step of the way. When I took over, the staff was already established and I kept them as is, so that was a tough thing for me to go from co-worker to boss overnight.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the The Voicecaster story. Tell us more about the business.
The Voicecaster is a voiceover casting house. It was established in 1975 by Robert Lloyd. We cast for Union and Non-Union projects to find talent of all ages. We cast for everything VO including various Foreign Languages and Celebrity voices. Our casting services include all areas of voiceover including Commercial, Animation, Video Games, Narration, Promos, Industrial, etc. We have four studios (and a fifth in process right now as we expand) and offer recording and studio services, VO ‘n’ Go which is our Signature Audition Recording service for actors, Demo production for Commercial, Animation, and Narration, and commercial and animation workshops to learn the art of voiceover.
As a company, I’m most proud of my staff and the kindness and support (and knowledge) we put out into the VO community. The entertainment industry can be cold at times, so we offer a safe place for actors and our clients alike. We truly believe we are all on the same team and each project requires a team effort. People tend to come into our studio/lobby/office and mention how “home-y” it feels. I feel that providing a safe environment allows everyone the chance to be more creative and succeed whether it’s the client we’re casting for who feels open to asking questions and making requests they need or the actors auditioning for us who feel they can give their best performance because they are comfortable.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think the fun part of the voiceover industry is that it’s constantly changing – new trends, new talent. The internet has had a big effect on the VO world since companies/producers can do casting for cheap online, but I think they are finding the quality isn’t nearly as strong in the auditions they are hearing; so more and more, we have clients coming back to us to do their casting for them to ensure a higher quality of talent and performances. Online casting sites are popping up all over the place, which essentially hurts the industry overall because talent are taking jobs for much lower rates than they would typically be paid. So, my hope for the future, is that the internet casting trend slows down a bit so the industry has a chance to recover and grow strong again.
