Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Love.
Kelly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Thank you for asking! Well I started as a model in Glasgow, Scotland signed with Colours Agency. During my time with the agency, I booked my first acting job as a supporting role on a BBC Drama. I then started working more as an actress doing theatre, some short and feature films, and taking classes and summer courses at the RSAMD. I got accepted into an acting program in Scotland called Langside College where I became a full-time student for two years.
During my time at Langside College, I auditioned for drama schools in the UK and the US and I was accepted into the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 2010. I moved to Los Angeles, CA in 2011 and entered into the full-time program where I worked with some of the best in the industry. The program included studies in camera work, theatre history, movement and acting, and performance. I graduated in 2013 and decided to stay in the sun and give the US industry a go.
Since graduating, I have been very fortunate to work with some incredible companies like the Oprah Winfrey Network, MTV, Ray Ban, ESPN, Investigation Discovery, Alpha Hollywood Studios, DeInstitutionalized, Duane A Sikes, A Shadow in the Dark Productions, and Right and Funny Productions.
After school, I took an internship with the casting studio formerly known as CAZT Studios, where not only did I learn a lot about the audition process, but I met my future husband, Matthew. Together we created a production company together called ToeNale Productions with which we have created sketches for our YouTube channel, short films, and even stage productions.
In 2019, we produced and created a short film called That’s My Time, which I wrote and starred in. It has collected some official selections, nominations and awards in the current festival circuit, including a Best actress award for myself (Yay)!
In 2020, I performed, wrote and produced a one-woman-show with our production company called PillowTalk With Nessie, which was held at the Complex Theater in Hollywood. Thankfully, it was well received with positive reviews.
Without my dream team, Wild Models and Trinity Artists International; without working with incredible acting coaches like Ben Martin, John Homa, Caroline Liem, Christy Faison and Jami Rudofsky; without Directors like Deanna Psilopoulos, Lenny Britton, Christopher Ray and a range of talented actors, as well as the support and love from my family and friends, I wouldn’t be able to be on the road to my dream career.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say it hasn’t been a smooth road in the slightest. Most struggles I have experienced came from either a difference in culture that I had to adapt to, or also learning that you have to stand up for yourself and hold yourself to a high standard. Because no one else can do that for you but you.
I also feel that I had to learn new, red flags on predators taking advantage of young actresses, which unfortunately has led to sexual assaults and threats being made on my career. But with therapy and love and support from loved ones, I was able to grow and be the strong, confident woman I am today.
I do my best to tell women my stories of survival so they can try and learn from my experiences on panels and in material that I create.
Thank you for sharing that. So let’s talk business. Tell us about ToeNale Productions – what should we know?
Our production company ToeNale Productions, is about telling stories one clip at a time. We create projects and work with our friends so we can all be able to work whenever it’s quiet in the creative world. And be able to challenge ourselves in ways we haven’t before in a safe space.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel that my professionalism, work ethic, attitude and my gratitude for each and every time I get to work are the keys to any success I get to have in the career I work very hard for. And also keeping in mind that life is not the rehearsal. So keep your ears open, be open minded and laugh more. We are pretending after all.
