Meet Kellie Chen of Fytt Beauty in El Segundo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kellie Chen.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kellie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always been fascinated by consumer brands. To me, to build a successful brand requires incredible discipline in understanding and executing strategy and creativity. After graduating from the University of California Davis with a Communications degree, I knew, without a doubt, that I wanted to pursue my career in CPG brand & marketing.

This career passion persisted and grew largely in the Beauty industry. In the past 10+ years, I have worked under a wide range of Fortunate 500 companies, such as LVMH, Proctor & Gamble (P&G) and North America Diageo. The skincare brands I worked on included SK-II, Freeman Beauty, Herbalife Skincare & Ole Henriksen. I have had the opportunity to help create and manage multi-million-dollar marketing campaigns and build the skills in leading cross-functional teams, including research, product development, creative, operations and to develop business plans, brand marketing, and promotional strategies.

I have enjoyed and savored every moment of building my career. About two years ago, after a serious contemplation on the next level of my career challenge, my husband, who has also been in the CPG industry, and I decided to create our own company. We felt that with our combined 25+ years of professional experience in strategy, brand and marketing, we were able to build something effectively that reflected our values and beliefs and a creation that we were deeply passionate about.

Fytt Beauty was born — with a vision to inspire healthy actions. We wanted to bring our health-conscious lifestyle with devotion to nutrition and wellness to skincare. Fytt Beauty was officially launched in July 2017!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the biggest struggles building Fytt is learning to come up with creative solutions with a shoestring budget. Often times, with the things you don’t know how to do – e.g., putting together a website, or making a digital ad, instead of hiring someone, you learn how to do it yourself.

But what is great is that you truly ‘learn’ so much and you learn not to be dependent on anyone, at least for now when we are still a start-up. It’s a very empowering feeling!

Please tell us about Fytt Beauty.
Fytt Beauty is created with a mission to offer the most ‘health-conscious’ beauty products for wellness-minded individuals. A brand inspired by Wellness, Fytt is like, “Lululemon meets Nike in the beauty space.” The name is created from the word “fit,” which by definition means “in good health.”

Many skincare products in the marketplace use trendy ingredients and are oftentimes short-term solution-oriented. If you have a pimple, the product sells it to be a spot treatment. If you have dull skin, the product sells it to be a brightening solution. They’re not focused on what your skin really needs to stay fundamentally healthy in the long-term. Many skin issues should be preventative! That’s why Fytt was created – to make healthy products, with large doses of “antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals,” to strengthen your skin with the “essential nutrients” it needs, to stay fit.

Our first line of products is inspired by the ever-popular juicing movement. The products literally feel like applying juice smoothie on your body. They are uniquely formulated to offer megadoses “essential nourishment” to keep your skin healthy and “fit.”

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wish I had taken more classes in photography and graphic design!

To save money and time in the long run, I am learning from the ground up on how to operate Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator so I can execute my ideas onto graphic visuals more efficiently without being depended on someone. Its definitely challenging, but I am getting pretty good at it!
