Today we’d like to introduce you to Keeley Bumford.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Keeley. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a freelance artist, songwriter, producer-composer for ads and TV. I grew up in Northwest Washington State playing flute, piano and participating in choir and musicals. It wasn’t until my junior year in high school that I discovered my love for jazz through Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.
I knew I needed to be a performer, so I applied and got accepted to Berklee College of Music where I studied vocals and audio production and engineering. Upon graduation, I moved to Los Angeles where I’ve resided for the last 8 years building and network and continually shaping the type of work I want to be focusing on.
In that time, I’ve also shaped my artistic identities into my solo project (Dresage) which marries past and present through a rose-colored art pop lense & my collaboration project (More Giraffes) which is fun, bright bombastic pop electronic music.
Has it been a smooth road?
The music industry is very fickle and changes completely every 3-5 years in the ways music is consumed and shared, so it’s been a learning curve upon each shift. Artists are taken advantage of, and there are plenty of bad actors trying to take a piece of your income always.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I sing and write/produce songs for a living. I’ve found a niche in being a first call for a lot of composers because I have the technical ability and home studio to record myself and send off my files to remote collaborators.
I believe that skill set, paired with years of vocal/stylistic work sets me apart from other singers who move to LA hoping to work in music.
I’m most proud of my completely word of mouth Rolodex of clients who pass me along to their friends and continue to expand my reach.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the access to outdoors, the beach, the mountains and the general buzz of collaboration and creativity that lives here which is unlike any other music hub.
I dislike the extreme poverty and homelessness that I feel helpless in fighting, the insane cost of housing and the pollution.
