Today we’d like to introduce you to K’aynna
Hi K’aynna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started singing as just a hobby, but in 2016 I joined a contest to get to meet my favorite artist, Big K.R.I.T. I didn’t win, but, I started to really enjoy it so I just kept going. Initially, I did not want to sing. I didn’t believe it was my calling. I made Social Work my career and singing was just something I did on the weekends. I put a few songs on SoundCloud and YouTube. I felt that way up until 2018. I started sharing my singing videos on the internet and I started getting noticed. When Charlie Wilson shared me on his page, something sparked in me. I quit my job and came to LA. Then COVID started so I went back home. I came back earlier this year and got right back to work. I’m currently working on my second project that I am putting out in the first quarter of the year.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road for me. I have been homeless, broke, starved, lost friends, lost my voice, and sleep deprived. At some point, life made me sit down. I didn’t want to sit down, but it made me realize that in order to really make it, I had to really take a look at myself. I hurt myself in the military and my injury showed up in such a horrible way, so horrible that I wasn’t able to make music. I was so depressed. It’s like my life shut down. I lost my confidence in my abilities and in myself in general. Looking back though, it was all a blessing in disguise to find out who I was outside of my talent and the exterior that people experienced. I had a supervisor once tell me that there were two very important days in your life, the day you were born and the day you find out why. Music is my why, so now I believe everything that happened to me prepared me for who I am and who I will be.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Neo soul/R&B artist raised in Little Rock, Arkansas. My proudest achievement to date concerning my craft was getting that first Royalty check. My debut single “Again” was played in the West Indies and I got 2 dollars from it. It’s like a business owner getting that first dollar. It made me so happy. Since then, I have been recognized by Montell Jordan, Charlie Wilson,Masego and Ta-watha Agee from Mtume, amongst others. “Again” has amassed global success and that song alone has let me reach people far and wide. What sets me apart from others is my work ethic and the fact that I cannot be boxed in vocally. I will lock myself away until what needs to be done is done. I work really hard on my craft and I try to let my music and my aura speak for itself
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
First off, if it wasn’t for my mother and my brother, I wouldn’t be here today. They don’t know how easy they make my life. They have never let me give up and I will always cherish them.
I would like to thank my girl Nina. She is more than just business. That’s my sister! Her knowledge and willingness really is admirable. She took a chance on me early on. Meeting her was one of the best moves I ever made. We lean on each other still and that will forever be my sister!
I really want to thank Big Sant. He really made me start thinking big. He has shown me what I could do and who I could be. He lets me be me and my creativity shines because of it.Outside of the music he and his family have been there for me in more ways than one. He has sat up and wrote plenty of songs with me and he is part of the reason I am here in this space today. His charisma just lifts me up! I really don’t know where I would be at musically if it wasn’t for him!
Barry Hutchinson has also been standing in the gap for me as well. We shared so many laughs in the studio! He just gets it. He put me on a road to success!
I want to thank Michael Clark as well. He has given me opportunities to broaden my writing pallette and my vocal abilities. After my hiatus from music, I lost a lot of my confidence, and he is and has helped me get out of my head. He is teaching me what it means to be a professional in this industry. I am honored to be one of his students.
I also thank Vee, Joon, Jarrett and Domani. They make me sound so good live! My engineer Andu, he keeps my vocals tight, Kev from Joker studios, the A team out in Little Rock, and the Champagne Campaign- Teko, Erin, P, Kreatev and Yavo.
Special thanks to Anthony Logan for always having my back,Duhn B, Jason T.,Aaron, Darryl and Kristina. My best friend Shalondra! This girl has seen the best and the worst in me and she is still here supporting me. My girl Dedra for being on this rollercoaster with me through a lot of ups and a bunch of downs. I thank Koi,and Mariah for being the first people to hit the stage with me and anyone that helped me along the way.
