Meet Kayla Allen and Marni Rosenthal Chaikin of Pure Barre Brentwood and Pure Barre Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Allen and Marni Rosenthal Chaikin.

Marni opened the Pure Barre Brentwood studio in February 2009, the first Los Angeles location. Five Years later she opened her second studio in Woodland Hills with Kayla, a client from Brentwood who then bought into the Brentwood location as well. In February 2014, they opened their third studio, Pure Barre Santa Monica which was the 200th studio in the nation. They recently sold the Woodland Hills location to their head teacher and now, they operate the Brentwood and Santa Monica studios together, which includes teaching! Pure Barre is now international with studios in Canada and plans to continue to expand and innovate as the biggest barre-based workout.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s never a smooth road, lol! There’s never a dull moment when you’re running your own business (especially with multiple locations!) Each day, brings little or large challenges that we must overcome We’ve had to deal with everything from overflowing toilets, to parking ordinances gone bad, sound issues due to music volume. You name it! There’s a ton of competition in this town, so we are very meticulous about giving a community-oriented experience to each client. We also insist our teachers are the absolute best so you get the best workout while hanging out with people who make up a community. We want to make sure our clients have a unique top quality experience that they can’t otherwise have in other competitive boutique fitness studios or big box gyms. As the competition has grown we have, of course, had to work harder, but we are still the best barre studio in LA!

Please tell us about Pure Barre Brentwood and Pure Barre Santa Monica.
Pure Barre is a barre-based workout. We use small isometric movements to target arms, thighs, seat and abs in only 50 minutes. Each strength section is followed by a stretch, to create strong, long, lean muscles. We also have a new Cardio Centric class called: Pure Empower that makes use of a small platform, wrist and ankle weights to increase your heart rate while toning. It’s a great compliment to pure barre!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Probably do it while we were younger without children! But nothing really comes to mind other than that. Every lesson we have learned has helped us so much with future issues. There are no regrets we have about our studios. It sounds cheesy, but it’s true! Having a business partner always makes it a lot easier to laugh when things go wrong too, so that helps!
