Meet Katie Mullen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Mullen.

Hi Katie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I originally moved to LA as a dancer. After some success and many failures, I began working as a celebrity trainer and group fitness instructor in Brentwood and West Hollywood. Leading sold-out classes and packing my schedule with private clients left me feeling purposeful and in alignment, but I was also burned out and still not completely fulfilled. When COVID hit, I began to offer donation-based classes to my clients and community through Zoom and IG live. I really wanted to create a space where they could feel connected and maintain some sense of optimism and normalcy. As a dancer, movement has always been really therapeutic for me. I wanted to find a way to offer the healing work I’d been doing on my own to my clients in a way that still felt accessible and recognizable to them. I didn’t know where it was all going, but word of my classes spread, my method developed and I eventually created The Line by Katie Mullen.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If you’ve ever worked out over Zoom, you know it hasn’t been a smooth ride. Thankfully, through the grace and patience of my clients, I’ve learned to just roll with the punches. What I didn’t realize going in was that I wasn’t just showing up as a fitness instructor/wellness enthusiast. I also had to do customer service, finance, marketing, tech support…you name it. Another unexpected challenge has been learning to consistently show up on social media. Although in-person I tend to be an over-sharer, constantly self-promoting has a way of bringing out your insecurities. This process has taught me the importance of always coming back to yourself, your breath, and your body. So ironically, it’s deepened my own personal healing practice and, in turn, strengthened my method.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Line is strongly inspired by my dance training. I teach a number of toning classes as well as dance cardio, trampoline cardio, and yoga-inspired flows. My classes are music driven and integrate breath, resistance and opposition using light weights, body weight and pilates based movement. These elements work together to create long lean lines, stability in the body, and a balanced mindset. I’m a huge believer in holistic health. I want my students to feel good in their body, both physically and mentally, and that means creating workouts that promote consistency, sustainability and growth. Aside from this, I’m probably most known for my curated playlists, breaking down proper form and making inappropriate jokes. At minimum my class is a safe space to get a great workout, listen to bomb music, sweat and have fun!

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’ve been loving podcasts that center around growth, psychology and humor. Almost 30 PodcastThe Expanded Podcast by To Be Magnetic and Armchair Expert are three of my go-to’s. The last book I read was Untamed by Glennon Doyle and I couldn’t put it down.
