Meet Katie Echeverry of Unique Vintage in Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Echeverry.

Katie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Started as a side business in my garage in 2000. A friend made me a website for free and it took me 6 months to get my first order. Over the next several years, sales began to pick up and at one point Glamour magazine mentioned uniquevintage.com as one of their favorite places to shop for vintage clothing. Sales went through the roof. I realized that this side business may be more than a hobby. I switched from authentic vintage to vintage inspired clothing so that I could meet my customer demand. I also started manufacturing my own product. In 2007, I moved my blooming business to its first office space which organically turned into our first retail store. With the explosive growth of the internet, I spent the next 5 years scrambling to keep up. Now, 15 years later, I have 50 employees and have learned a ton.

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not! Since I had no business training at all, I truly had to learn along as I went. I was thinking the other day what an unlikely success I am. When I started I had no experience in apparel, vintage, e-commerce, marketing, retail…. I mean, come on!! I had to learn how to do it all as I went. Although there were difficult times, I have worked with the most amazing people and have had the ride of my life!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Unique Vintage story. Tell us more about the business.
We sell vintage inspired and unique apparel online. We are known for our classic, retro appeal that can be worn by the modern woman. Our clothing has always been a way for a woman to stand out from the crowd and be whoever they want to be. I am most proud of my company culture and the way we embrace all women and encourage them to be exactly who they are.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We are growing each and every year. I love the fact that I learn something new weekly if not daily. E-commerce is taking over the world and we are happy to be on this trajectory.
