Meet Kathy Gotz of True Body Fitness in Los Alamitos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Gotz.

Kathy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Many years ago as a young mother with two small children, I was diagnosed with Lupus. The onset of the disease was swift and debilitating. It made everyday tasks that were previously easy, a challenge. For several years, I strictly adhered to the prescriptions that my primary physician had given me. One day, I came across a Groupon ad for a two-week boot camp which I purchased for ten dollars. The doctor I was seeing said that the most psychical activity I should be performing is walking, but I wasn’t feeling great and knew something had to change.

During the boot camp, I got up at 5:00 a.m. every morning. I started with little 3lbs. weights and basically walked for all of the running activities for fear of injuring myself (per my doctor’s recommendations). Two weeks turned into three years. During that time, I became physically fit and lost the 30 lbs. that I had gained since my initial diagnosis. I fell in love with movement and exercise and decided that I wanted to help other women in similar situations. Exercise and eating healthy had become my passion and I knew that it was time for me to turn my passion into a career.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve built my business from the ground up. I started with one client, and slowly over past three years have built it into a thriving, profitable, business without any outside investors.

One struggle is the competition. In SoCal, personal trainers, CrossFit, yoga and pilates studios are everywhere. A looming question when I first started was how do I speak to people in a way that separates me from everyone else? Since that time, I’ve learned how to tell my story in a way that resonates with the women I’m trying to help. I’ve learned that people are looking for a real person to guide them. At its core, my message it that committing to making nutrition and fitness a lifestyle is the key to feeling your best.

Please tell us about True Body Fitness.
Our fitness and nutrition coaching are designed to help women who have suffered from previous medical issues or who are recovering from injuries. Most of my clients are looking to live everyday life without the fear of hurting themselves. They simply want to lose weight and move better.

As a trainer, the thing I’m most proud of is that my clients trust me enough to be a part of their lives. They trust me enough to do what I ask them to do, even though it can be difficult. When it comes down to it, in this industry, your clients buy into you. Trust is the foundation, and I establish and build trust by respecting my clients and listening to them.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
If you are in business to help people, there is a place for you. For someone just starting out, I would absolutely recommend our city. You can start anywhere as long as you’re able to separate yourself from the competition, and consistently provide value to your clients.

Pricing:

  • Pricing for private training ranges from $560 to $720 per month depending on the number of sessions per week the client requests.
