So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Twelve years ago, I had a raw foods booth at the Sunset Valley Farmers Market in Austin, TX. The business was thriving, but I had a mouthful of oral issues. Both my parents had lost their teeth by 50 and was I headed for the same fate even though I took excellent care of my teeth. I had bad genes. I put together an organic Brushing Rinse made of food grade hydrogen peroxide, aloe vera and anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral essential oils. My teeth got super white in three days; my tooth sensitivity went away and my periodontal issues cleared up in a month. I was on to something. I sold it at the farmers market and our customers and their dentists went crazy for it. Today, our BR Organic Brushing Rinse is the number one selling Natural Oral Rinse in the US and has been for two years. This year we added the amazing non-abrasive BR Organic Toothpaste and the On-Demand BR Tooth Polish to complete our new oral care system: The Pristine Protocol. The protocol strengthens tooth enamel, removes tartar and surface stains. By adding Polish On-Demand, people can avoid the over abrasion and tooth sensitivity that brushing with normal toothpaste tends to cause. We also sell 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide that cleans virtually anything and does so without imparting any toxic residue. Essential Oxygen is beloved by many loyal customers and we’ve enjoyed double digit growth every year since our inception.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
2017, a barrage of challenges presented themselves that made for a demanding and stressful year. Looking back now however, I can’t complain about 2017. My team and I feel like we got an advanced degree from all that we learned. And the best news is, we are now is a position for significant scaling. The so-called trials of 2017 were not what our egos wanted, but they were what our company needed. As they say, the universe was conspiring in our favor.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Essential Oxygen story. Tell us more about the business.
So my team and I created Essential Oxygen, a certified woman-owned, triple bottom line company that sees this planet and its people beaming with optimal health and promotes our vision by creating truly effective and clean natural products. We are a self-funded, almost all-woman team that deeply believes in our products and making the world a better place. We also utilized conscious and progressive methods for operating the company. We utilize collective intelligence on group calls and to examine issues and make decisions. We employ Authentic Relating techniques to facilitate communication. We contribute money, product and our time to a variety of causes like Autism Hope Alliance, Shelter Partnership, La Casa de Las Madres, City Slickers Farms, Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation and the Whole Kids Foundation among others. In 2019 we will consolidate our social mission around building Regenerative Communities. We are working on getting our B-Corp certification. Our quality products, integrity, and heart sets Essential Oxygen apart from many brands. This is quite satisfying.
