Today we’d like to introduce you to Kassidy Slaughter.
Hi Kassidy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey began around five years ago when I truly decided that nothing lights my soul up more than film. Acting is my key realm, but I find that learning the entire process from in front of the camera to behind helps you become a well-rounded artist. With that said, you grow a deeper respect for each role-taking their part to make a production.
I thoroughly enjoy working both in front and behind the camera. There’s such an excitement that fills my bones, knowing that we are exerting our creative energy to create something beautiful. I landed my first agent when I was 15, and from there, I’ve been auditioning for years. Beforehand, I worked as background talent on numerous projects and began taking classes. Now as a young adult, I feel like my creative sphere has grown tremendously. From creating my own projects to starting my own podcast to expanding my horizons in ways beyond just creatively, I’m proud of the woman I am growing into. Although I believe there is always room for more growth, I’m becoming more and more comfortable in my own skin each day. Alike many, I struggle with my mental health at times and looking back on the things I’ve accomplished reminds me what I’m capable of. We have to remind ourselves of the power we hold within, and when you truly feel and remember that, the possibilities are endless, you know? This has gotten me to where I am today, and I’m truly happy that mental health has become more of an awareness so I have these tools and reminders right in front of me unlike ever before. Overall, my mindset has greatly contributed to where I am today and where I continue to flow.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been easy, but I’m grateful that it’s worse than what it could be. I’ve heard many, in fact horrific, stories of actors going through hell with their minds while trying to pursue their careers. It’s quite scary what it can lead to mentally. You face a ton of rejections and what today’s peeps call “ghosting,” where you don’t hear anything at all. That in particular is the worst for me; however, it’s completely understandable that casting directors don’t have the time to respond to each tape they receive. So really, it’s not too bad. But it does play tricks on your mind at times. Overall, I’m thankful for the lessons I’ve learned along the way and the challenges I’ve faced. They’ve helped me to grow more than anything!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an actress and creator. I guess you could call me a creative, to keep it simple. Some of my most recent work includes TNT’s mini series, “I Am the Night”, my self-directed project, “Love, Josie”, and my podcast, the “Chats With Kass” Podcast. Personally, I am most proud of my self-directed projects thus far. It’s really shown me that I am capable of creating completely on my own when things get slow. I truly enjoy it, and being able to write your own story is pretty wickedly fun.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Patience is key. However, don’t sit around waiting for someone to choose you. Create your own opportunities!
