Bio:
Karla Yadira is a Mexican American. Born and raised in East Los Angeles. A first generation American and proudly embraces her Mexican heritage. Her mother Juana Guerra and her father Ricardo Valencia are both from Zamora Michoacán, Mexico. Karla grew up with musical influence from a very young age, seeing her father Ricardo Valencia, a former member of Grupo Navegación and Grupo Misterio Musical. Karla Yadira is a versatile artist not only in genres but also writes and sings in both English and Spanish. Her music includes Pop, Reggeton and Regional Mexican. She has been nominated for Maquis Who’s Who in America and has performed as part of The RYM Network’s Dream Team on Oye Todo Musik and Imagen Latina. The former RYM Network host and journalist, Yadira since embarked on a new path as she shares her music with the world.
I started writing music at the age of 9 years old. I had a huge crush on a boy in my 5th grade class and wrote him a cute little song. I have always been involved in music and arts. Whether it be dancing, playing instruments and singing. In middle school I started writing poems and in high school I joined the mariachi band and choir. As a kid I used to see my Dad perform and wanted to do the same someday. However, I grew up and life got ahead of me. I became a young mom and that became my motivation to work even harder. I went to college got a career I love in the medical field. Providing for my family became a priority and then Covid happened. I realized life is precious and short. I wanted to try to get back to writing and music, which was and is my passion. I enrolled myself at my local college and took a few music classes. I started working as a TV host and journalist where I gained so much knowledge and I’m so grateful for. I started promoting my demos trying to find someone to record them, but it’s difficult for any artist or band to record your music because they don’t know you and usually you need to have good connections. So I decided to release my own music singing it myself. If that was going to be the only way my music got heard that’s what I was going to do. It’s been a difficult journey but a great one at that. I have meet so many great people and made a few good friends along the way. I continue to work in the medical field as a respiratory therapist, on my free time I spend it with my family and what’s left of it a use it to write and create new music. I’m an independent artist and I record my music in the comfort of my room. I’m still learning and growing everyday in many ways. I will continue to dream and hustle for my goals. It’s never too late for you to go after your dreams. If you’re not happy with something, change it. There’s no worse regrets than what you didn’t do and in the end we only regret the opportunities we missed out on, the steps with didn’t take. So go out there and dream big!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but what in life is? Some of the struggles along the way have been lack of support by family and friends. In the beginning when I started singing and uploading videos to social media some family members would make fun of me. Maybe they thought I was making a fool of myself for putting myself out there, I don’t know. Being in controlling and toxic relationships that didn’t support my dreams and goals. Always making me choose between him or my dreams, my music. I lost friends and opportunities due to this relationship. But probably one of the biggest struggles has been between myself. Pushing my boundaries and getting out of my comfort zone. Time management and prioritization. Making time to write and make music. Let’s face it, music is not paying my bills but no matter the circumstances I have to keep myself motivated and moving forward. Staying positive and believing in myself. We are our own worst critics.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a respiratory therapist and work in hospital in my hometown. I help people breathe better everyday. My job includes giving breathing treatments, providing oxygen therapy, educating patients on respiratory issues and techniques, therapy and treatments to help their specific needs. I give lifesaving care when needed such as invasive and noninvasive ventilation, and cpr. I assist the doctor with intubation to protect patients airway and lungs. When I’m not doing that, I write and create music. Mostly in regional mexican but I do have a few songs out in English as well. Writing and singing is my passion. I used to write about my experiences and feelings but not anymore. I now find motivation on anything that catches my attention. It can be a certain conversation that had something that caught my ear or for example “Poniendo a Prueba “ a song a wrote due to the show Young Sheldon. I was watching the episode where the grandma starts dating Sheldon’s professor then she gets a call from her ex trying to get back in the picture. That clip inspired Poniendo a Prueba. All I could think about was that why is it that when we are finally moving on and healing from a bad relationship, we find someone who’s good to us, why does the ex always want to come back. I feel it’s destiny testing us. Seeing if we’ve learned our lesson being in that toxic relationship. If we learned we move on and pass the test.
