Meet Kara Jensen of Bop Design in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Jensen.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kara. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I founded Bop Design ins 2008 with my husband, Jeremy Durant. My background is in marketing and graphic design and Jeremy’s is sales and marketing. We were tired of our careers being controlled by the companies we worked for and decided to start our own business. There are a ton of design and marketing agencies throughout Southern California, but none that focused solely on B2B companies.

From the start, we were focused on filling that need and creating compelling brands, websites and marketing campaigns that generate leads and help grow our client’s businesses.

We practice what we preach and now get 100% of our business from inbound marketing.

We work with clients all over the globe and have built an amazing interdisciplinary team that passionately supports our client’s marketing needs.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road – it never is. Some of the biggest obstacles is learning all the HR, legal and financial parts of managing the business. We started the business with a great foundation of design, marketing and sales knowledge, but had to learn everything else along the way.

Other big obstacles are find the “right” clients. Finding clients isn’t a problem, but developing a profile of your ideal client takes time and you learn from your mistakes. Your “ideal” client morphs over time as well.

Building the right team takes time and we’ve made mistakes. When you start out, you can’t afford the best talent and holding on to employees that don’t grow with your business can create a negative culture and hold your team as a whole back. Knowing when to get make a change – whether hiring for a new role or getting rid of an underperforming employee has taken time to learn.

Legal – the value of a tight contract is priceless. We’ve learned the hard way!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bop Design – what should we know?
Bop Design is THE B2B AGENCY. We do Web Design, Content Marketing and Branding for B2B Companies.

B2B client acquisition is not the same as B2C– a B2B website, brand messaging and content marketing play a much different role. At Bop Design, we understand the B2B marketing and sales funnel and the tactics that generate and nurture ideal client leads.

This is what we excel at and what we are known for.

The biggest thing that sets us apart is our B2B focus. Most agencies don’t have that narrow of a focus and try and be everything to everyone.

We have a narrow Sector focus – B2B.

We have a narrow vertical focus – Engineering, Software, Industrial, Healthcare, Consulting, Financial, and Tech.

We have a narrow service offering – Branding, Web Design (WordPress Only) and Content Marketing. We provide these services as a package.

I’m most proud of our discipline and ethics. I see plenty of agencies that chase money, even if they aren’t sure they can deliver on it. We never take on a client where we aren’t confident that we can deliver real value.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Discipline and patience. The discipline to stay focused and work hard. Patience to see your hard work pay off.
