Today we’d like to introduce you to Kandy Lozano.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey as an artist originally began in the world of fashion. I studied design and worked as a designer for an international women’s apparel company in Chicago, then continued in Dallas and Los Angeles. I opened a retail store in Pacific Palisades in the early 90’s designing children’s clothing but eventually began focusing more time on my other passion- my art. I developed my unique style of painting and found representation in a few cities to begin exhibiting my work. I later opened my own gallery with a partner in West Hollywood which was an incredible experience in seeing both sides of the business. It gave me great exposure and insight to the business of art. Today I work out of my studio in LA and have representation in several cities including Aspen, Carmel and Malibu.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I definitely had some struggles along the way but I would call them building blocks. There has been an opportunity in learning from both my successes and mistakes that’s been invaluable.
Please tell us more about your art.
I am a contemporary abstract painter best known for my signature layered wax paintings. I primarily work in the ancient medium of encaustic where I heat and layer pigmented beeswax and damar resin- much of the time on large scale paintings. I’m especially drawn to the optical depth of the wax and I use that in creating these beautiful, ethereal paintings. Each painting is unique in the way it is created with fire. The molten wax is poured on the surface and I use a blow torch as an artist would use a brush to move the wax. This makes each painting truly one of a kind.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in a big family in the Midwest and I was the middle of 6 kids. I was always drawing and incredibly supported by my family to pursue my artistic talent. So I did lots of drawings! We also had lots of animals, dogs to horses and we all had (and still have) a deep love for animals. I loved riding horses. I was pretty much a happy and active kid with great friends. Some of those friends still in my life today.
