Today we’d like to introduce you to Kandis Golden.
Kandis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2014, after film school, I stepped out on faith and decided to move to LA. I ended up getting a job within the first few days of arriving as a personal assistant to an independent director and acting coach. I worked there for about a year and learned a lot, but I wanted to get studio experience. I eventually landed as a production coordinator at DreamWorks Animation. It was like discovering a passion I didn’t know I had. I really love working in animation, and even though my personal work is live action, it has helped me develop my eye. I also still assist part-time at a small documentary company Night Fire Films. I’ve been there for about five years, it’s like working with family.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ha! As I like to say, it hasn’t been easy but it has been divine. Between working for the director and at Dreamworks, I worked for this really horrible architect in Beverly Hills. One consistent struggle I found was applying to various grants and opportunities and consistently getting rejected. I think that’s partially what happens when you exist at the intersection of so many margins (black, femme, queer, etc.), and the other part is just my luck 🙂 Either way, I’m thankful for the journey.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Intermatic – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
My “business” varies. Making my film, Edible, forced me to start an LLC, so I guess by trade I am a production company, however the best part about working for yourself is that you can be flexible in what you offer. I suppose my first business was offering tarot readings, but I also technically have been my own business since working with Night Fire.
I’m really proud to say that with Intermatic LLC I’m a business owner and that I’ve followed my intuition the entire way. The name itself is a word I created to mean spiritual work/practice for lack of a better term. For example, letting your intuition guide you is an intermatic process, one that you have to consult your deepest self for. I am leading with my heart first and allowing everything else to fall into place.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My big plan for the future is putting my short film Edible into the world, and hopefully following it up with other work. No big changes, just more of the same, more love, more joy, more divinity.
