Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamia McCoy
Hi Kamia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi, I am Kamia, some know me as Mia and others as MiSA, which is my artist name. I’ve always loved music as a kid. I first started with my dad, he would make beats on his beat machine and I’ll have the headphones on trying to copy the beat. I played the keyboard when I was 5-6 years old. I remember banging on the walls, on my bed and on the tables making beats all around the house. I’ve also played the flute and violin in school. Where I am right now in life I manifested/prayed and did the work to get here. I am originally from Ohio and moved to Los Angeles last year. Music is one of my first loves. Right now I can say I’m self taught (re-teaching) myself because I have my own beat machine testing out sounds and making them for myself. I have been singing since I was like 7 and writing music at 15 years old. I just dropped my first ever EP this summer titled Versatile fully written and produced by me. I am just now getting my foot in and showing others my sound and how I cannot be placed in the box.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This journey has so many twist and turns. It sometimes makes you want to stop, but that is not an option for me. I do have days where the road is smooth then BAM there’s an obstacle. Keeping the faith can be a challenge for me because I want to see fast result. I believe the quicker you get something that faster you can lose it, so I am learning patience. My personal life can get in the way where it stops me from putting my all into my music, but once that storm goes away I can write about it for my next song. (Lol) Another challenge is leaving home and moving to a city you have never been before just to follow your dreams. You will have a lot of people who don’t believe in you. You may have some secretly supporting and openly. Sometime your family and friends can be road blocks for you with their projections.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Music Artist and my artist name is MiSA. A creator. I specialize in writing my music and producing it. I am known for rapping, singing, dancing and also tapping into my sewing skills. I feel that it all comes in handy with who I am as an artist and creative. I am most proud that I kept going and believing in myself without support and that can be pretty tough. What sets me apart from others is that I am me. No one else can be me. I have my own way in doing things. My style, sound and personality is very versatile and unique. I’ve created a lane for myself and I love it.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I like to listen to Toni Jones Affirmations for Grown Woman while I’m in the car. It gets me pumped. It is on Apple Music. I do like to use a mediation app to do some deep breathing and ground myself because I can be overwhelmed with life in a new city. I also workout every day to keep up with myself physically, mentally and emotionally. Right now I don’t have any favorite books but there are 3 that I am looking forward to reading. 1. Control your mind and master your feelings. 2. Healing the Feminine Energy. 3. The Little Black Book of Success.
