Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalani Dreimanis.
Kalani, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I graduated from Ryerson University in Toronto with a BA in Broadcasting. I started working in post-production as an assistant editor in Reality Television while simultaneously producing several short films. After moving to LA, I interned briefly at Rat Entertainment (before it was RatPac) and Envision Media Arts. Straight Up Films hired me to be the assistant for their CEO and I started working with them in development and production. From there, I moved to international sales at Myriad Pictures and now I am the Director of International Sales at Epic.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As a Canadian, by far my largest challenge has been navigating the immigration world and constantly working on Visas and thinking about my next Visa. Aside from that, I did not really go to school for film production and development, and to my knowledge, there is no school for international film sales, so much of what I know has come from experience and learning from the people with whom I have worked. I continue to learn from my colleagues and others in the business. I live on my group chats, we are constantly asking each other questions and learning from each other.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Epic Pictures Group – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Epic Pictures is a production and US distribution company in operation since 2007. We are actively producing and financing films and representing these titles to our client base around the world at all major film and television markets. A number of our titles have premiered at prestigious film festivals including TIFF, SXSW, and Sundance. We also own and operate the “all things horror” website Dread Central, and in 2018 we expanded the Dread brand to begin releasing films in the US and Canada under the Dread Presents label. The Dread brand also includes a podcast network and an online game collection. We know how to curate our titles to fit our brand and our audience, at the same time as nurturing new talent and partnering with experienced filmmakers with a unique sense of storytelling.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are just wrapping production on a film in Ireland right now and have a number of projects lined up to start production in the new year. It will be exciting to see how the international landscape adapts in these times, and we think we have positioned ourselves for success in the new year with these new projects.
