Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Dean.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m a small-town kid from eastern Oregon that grew up driving a tractor, combine and preparing harvest at local ranches/farms. After High school, I received a college scholarship to run cross country and track. It was during my collegiate track career that I discovered my love for athletics, biomechanics and the limits of the human body. I quickly decided that I wanted to be a chiropractor and work with athletes. My goal was to be the absolute best doctor possible so I could help people achieve the pinnacle of their bodies capacities. This goal became a driving force towards every professional decision I made. It became clear to me after my first year at chiropractic college that the traditional chiropractic approach was outdated and limited to short term gains of pain reduction. I wanted to help my patients and athletes in a higher capacity and be able to solve more complex problems.
So I hit the road and began seeking out industry leading experts in the areas of low back pain, disc herniations, sciatica, nerve pain, physical therapy and osteopathic medicine. I took every seminar from thought leaders I could find to further my ability to help my patients. To my surprise, I was asked to be teach a class at the universities Master’s of Sports Medicine at 26. I soon thereafter was asked to start teaching seminars (U.S and Canada) myself and taught other doctors clinical reasoning skills and my approach to treating the human body. During this time, I co-invented a method to treating painful pinched nerves in the skin known as Dermal Traction Method.
In 2016, I was asked to be the performance sports therapist for the Chinese Olympic team in Shanghai China. I had the unique opportunity to work with Olympic gold medalist in sports like ping pong, Olympic weight lifting, basketball and track. The most unexpected thing occurred in Shanghai, I met the women that would eventually become my wife. Once my contract in China was up. I moved to Nigeria (Lagos) to marry my wife who is a popular Nigerian singer and professional dancer. She is also a tribal princess of the Ibusa tribe. We moved to L.A. so she could pursue her music career and I could start a practice.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Far from smooth. I was criticized by many fellow chiropractors that I was “too young” to be teaching other doctors how I treat patients and that my cutaneous nerve technique (dermal traction method) wasn’t valid. Today I’m still teaching sold out seminars and my dermal traction method is used by several professional sports teams including the Seahawks, Atlanta braves, etc. To say that it has been challenging would be an understatement.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dean’s Sports Therapy story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is Dean’s Sports Therapy in West Los Angeles. I offer a patient-centered approach that is focused on results, and not what the insurance companies will pay for. I specialist in the human body and areas of special interest are sports injuries, low back pain, herniated disc, sciatica, headaches, chronic pain, and nerve-related pain. What sets me apart is the shear amount of treatment approaches that I’ve learned paired with a strong dedication to see my patients achieve their goals. My business is known for helping those who have seen many doctors and have lost hope due to lack of results.
