Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Chung.
Justin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My Acupuncture career has been really eventful. I started studying Oriental Medicine and herbology from Naju College, South Korea in 2004 after two years of constantly questioning and doubting my linguistics major.
While I was studying English applied Linguistics, I teach English at language schools and kindergartens which I really loved but I always wanted something more than teaching, I thought the real opportunities were at practicing Acupuncture in the United States where it is still considered as a blue ocean so I dropped out from the University of Foreign Studies, which after two years I went back to finish the degree, and started my adventure as an Acupuncturist.
After long years of school and serving in the army for 2 years, I finally transferred all my credit to Southbaylo University in 2008 and graduated from Dongguk University Los Angeles with a Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in 2013.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Due to the economic downturn in the US in 2008, the KRW / USD rate plunged and the tuition fee almost doubled. Many friends at that time had to return to Korea. I had to take a leave of absence for a while too.
Please tell us about Raah Natural Care.
In our modern world, the focus on the patient is often overlooked and undervalued. I believe that the true beauty comes from healthy mind, body, and diet. That is why I focus on the patient as a whole person before any symptoms.
First step of my treatments begins by getting to know the patients’ life style and emotional state on top of building trust. This is where I have proud in since my style of treatment is aimed at restoring quality care, and patient satisfaction by spending the necessary time and allowing the process that supports health and vitality.
I specialize in Saam Acupuncture – which is also known as the four needles technique. Saam Acupuncture is one of the original therapeutic modalities representing traditional Korean medicine. It is a unique treatment method by using 4 needles at a time to address the core issues of any symptom. If you can help the patients with lesser amount of needles, why not? Less is more and eventhough acupuncture needles are usually painless, nobody really likes them.
Many acupuncture practitioners use herbs to help the patients but not many places actually make customized herbal decoctions precisely formulated for each individual. Since every patient is unique I believed that the herbal formulas should be prepared accordingly.
Our office also specializes in Skin Issues by working from both in and out with help of my wife Karen who works with me as an Esthetician. Patients can get skin care using USDA certified organic products and acupuncture at the same time.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would like to believe that all the time I wandered were necessary.
