Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Greenbaum.
Julie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I launched Fuck Cancer in 2010 to honor my mother’s legacy; she lost her battle with Ovarian Cancer the year before.
At 19-years old, I created Fuck Cancer with the desire to unify a generation of young adults who had been affected by the disease and raise funds for Cancer research. Starting as a 350-person party in my hometown of Montreal, my F Cancer events model quickly tripled in size, eventually spiraling into many events across North America.
These parties not only raise hundreds of thousands of dollars but also act as an important outlet for the younger generation to unite and collectively fight back against Cancer.
My international efforts began in 2010, throwing events across Canada and The United States. In 2014, I merged with Yael Cohen Braun’s Fuck Cancer, creating one unified non-profit.
Now, at eight years old, Fuck Cancer creates unique digital and on-the-ground programs and campaigns that focus on prevention, early detection and psychosocial support. Through the use of digital media, programs and large-scale events, Fuck Cancer believes its community will be the generation that ultimately improves health outcomes.
In my role as Co-Founder and Chief Revenue Officer, I oversee the charity’s fundraising efforts. I focus on expanding the events model, allowing the charity to make a measurable impact in reducing Cancer risk and improving early detection. Since 2009, Fuck Cancer has collectively raised over $4.5 million towards research and digital solutions to prevent cancer. I truly remain inspired and empowered by my mother’s ongoing legacy.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There were many struggles along the way. One of the biggest issues we encountered was not having enough supply for the demand of events that were being requested. We started receiving emails from all over North America asking to bring our F Cancer parties to different cities. We were expanding very quickly and had to adjust to try and maintain our brand equity while managing exponential growth. Looking back, it was a wonderful problem to have. It meant that we were providing an experience that resonated across the board.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with F Cancer – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
As the Co-Founder and CRO of the charity, one of my main focuses is our events model. Not only does this model generate revenue for our programs, it provides an opportunity for the younger generation to connect around philanthropy in a fun interactive way. It’s an outlet for individuals to give back and support their loved ones by feeling a sense of responsibility and ownership over their donation. I believe everyone who has been affected by Cancer shares a special bond and I’m very proud that we have built a platform that allows people to come together and unite against such a horrible disease.
Our focus on community and connectivity truly sets us apart from other Cancer organizations.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m looking forward to continuing to grow and build our programs that focus on prevention and early detection. Changing the behavior of a generation to ultimately improve health outcomes is a powerful goal and I’m excited to keep working with our team to get closer to the finish line.
