Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Suh.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always been interested in fashion and business from a very young age. I remember in middle school, I wrote down what I wore every day to make sure I didn’t repeat outfits.
One summer, I learned how to knit and sold hand-knitted scarves during the following school year for $20 each. Of all my friends, I chose the best pieces while shopping together and was always asked to pick out their outfits.
In the middle of high school, I moved to California from Philly and became really lost in which career I wanted to pursue. I figured since I had a love for both business and fashion, I enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise in Los Angeles studying Merchandise Marketing.
After graduating, I worked my way up in the industry through all sorts of positions including buying, marketing, brand management, and styling. Then I started to branch out independently and offer freelance services to a handful of clients, and it wasn’t until last year that I created my YouTube channel.
My first ever video was comparing the sizing and fit for Reformation jeans that hit over 20k views. Since then, I’ve made a commitment to myself to put out a video every week, and I am happy to say that I am still doing so in addition to my full-time and freelance positions.
My channel’s content is a mix of try-ons, reviews, look-books, and “how-to” videos that is a representation of my style.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Growing up, I was always envious of people who knew exactly what they wanted to do with their lives. I wanted a roadmap to follow, but my interests were all over the place revolving around creativity and business. Fortunately, I live in a city where freelance work is the norm, and you don’t have to be just one thing.
Also, my fear has always been the unknown and not having stability. I’m the one with the plan thinking ten steps ahead to make sure I’ll be okay, but it’s definitely still a barrier I’m overcoming. I’ve learned that you just have to take risks and go all in to be able to get to where you want to be in life.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I do a bit of everything. I’m a content creator, fashion stylist, marketing & brand consultant, and I dabble in graphic & interior design as well. I’m most proud of my ability to adapt with different situations and projects that have helped land me a variety of clients for different services.
I think the fact that there is only one me in this world that’s living a life only I can experience separates me from everyone else. Everything I’ve learned thus far has molded me into the person who has a unique set of skills with a mindset that’s my own.
Whether it’d be creating content for helping businesses grow or inspiring others in a positive way, I’m thankful to be able to use what I know to assist clients and the online community.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’d say my parents, previous bosses, and friends are responsible for where I’m at today.
I’ve received all my talents and interests directly from my parents, knowledge and work experience from previous bosses, and constant love and support from my friends.
I am so lucky to be surrounded by such motivating individuals that not only wish the best for me but push me to challenge myself in the best ways.
