Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Roth and Sophie Tabet.
Julia Roth: Honestly? We met at a silent rave freshman year of NYU. Within six weeks, I was staying with Sophie in London, writing our first short together. And it kind of just… exploded into a creative partnership. Since then, our friendship and writing partnership has spanned cities, countries, and continents. While Sophie was a CE in New York and I was working in development in Los Angeles, an online article about a kickass girl gang sparked an idea for a TV show, and we both quit our jobs and started writing it. Today, we’ve developed two TV shows and several features. We have worked in rooms, and write both original content and collaborate with directors and producers.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Sophie Tabet: This is the film industry – the road is never smooth! In all seriousness, the cultural obsession with “fast fame” was a hard one to navigate. In this industry, everything depends on timing, and the frustration with false starts and empty promises was a hard one. But the best thing about being a part of a partnership is you have a constant friend and teammate to root for you and challenge you to be better.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Hundo P Productions story. Tell us more about the business.
Julia Roth: We are a development and production company, specializing in film and TV, but also have a long history of music videos, shorts, and branded content. We like to tell character-driven stories and focus mainly on the underrepresented, and the boundary pushers.
It’s natural to us – we are a cross-cultural queer duo: Sophie is French-Lebanese raised in London, and I am an Eastern European Jew from California. We wanted to see ourselves on screen, tell stories that came from our hearts and our histories. Also, Sophie comes from a history of directing, and I have an acting background, so our scripts are imaginative, well-rounded, and bold.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Sophie Tabet: Pluck makes luck, and Karma is a bitch.
