Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Marley.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Julia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Performing has been a part of me for as long as I can remember. It was clear to my parents at a very young age that I wanted to be on stage, so they signed me up for musical theatre summer camps and community productions. I fell in love with the arts and connecting with people through storytelling.
Over the years I have had the opportunity to perform in shows throughout my community and in Los Angeles. In addition to musical theatre, I enjoy on-camera work. My latest project is portraying a Holy Harmony Dancer on Netflix’s new hit series, Dead to Me.
I recently released my first original song, My Place, which is about acceptance and love. As a mentor to performers with special needs for the past 6 years, these messages are very important to me. My Place is available on all music platforms, including Spotify, iTunes and YouTube.
I believe that with dedication, passion, and persistence, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. I am very grateful for the opportunities that I have been given, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest obstacle so far has been myself. I’m sure every performer can relate that getting over the harsh critiques from your inner perfectionist is truly the hardest challenge! As an artist, you will always be your toughest judge. I’m very hard on myself because I want to be the best that I can be. Dealing with rejection is another difficult part of being in the entertainment industry. Even though being told “no” can be frustrating, every audition is a learning experience. A successful audition isn’t based on whether you book the job; it’s if you leave feeling like you did your very best.
Tell us more about your work.
For the past six years, I have been mentoring and teaching performers with special needs with the Thousand Oaks-based non-profit Allwayz On Stage. I teach dance and audition technique workshops and am a mentor during our summer productions. We’ve created a Mentor-in-Training program, where young people have the opportunity to become mentors to those with disabilities. I also make promotional videos for the company, which can be found on our YouTube channel: Allwayz On Stage.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Positivity, passion, and dedication are the key ingredients to success. Nothing worth having comes easy, and if you are dedicated and fearless, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.
