Meet Juan Carlos Duran of Beach Cities Shave Spa in Manhattan Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Carlos Duran.

Juan Carlos, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My career began at 18 years old when I walked into a barber shop owned by a family friend. As I was getting my haircut we talked about my current work situation and the barber suggested I begin cutting hair.

At first, I thought nothing of it. As we spoke more I was more intrigued by the second. He offered me a job on the condition that I enroll in barber college.

I enrolled and soon began learning the craft. As the months passed on I received my California state board license and eventually quit my night job at the airport. I was now a full-time barber.

I worked in a mom and pops shops for a few years and eventually obtained a position at high-end luxury barber shop and realized this was the type of business I wanted to open.

After moving to San Francisco for a few years to teach the art of the barbering I returned to Los Angeles to open my first barber studio and now my storefront in Manhattan Beach.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was never a smooth road. There was always challenges. Like most new barbers I was treating this industry as a job and not a career. Once I knew what I wanted to do in this industry I sacrificed a lot including taking lower paying jobs and struggling financially to take advantage of the education they were offering.

Also having to move back in with my parents and investing every single dollar I had into myself was one of the toughest things I’ve had to do.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Beach Cities Shave Spa – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Beach Cities Shave Spa is an intimate exclusive way to enjoy a therapeutic straight razor shave including aromatherapy and skin care. As well as all traditional barber services.

We specialize in straight razor shaving and beard sculpting.

Our customer service is what sets us apart. From the online booking to the reminder notifications, all details are thought out with the client in mind.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future include opening my own barber college. With a huge passion towards teaching that is the biggest goal for me.
