Meet Josie Cotton of Kitten Robot Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josie Cotton.

Hi Josie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a singer-songwriter who came to LA from Texas to be a recording artist… My career started out as the typical independent woman not wanting to compromise and getting the door constantly shut in her face. That is until I met Larson and Bobby Paine. They were incredibly talented in their own right and the first ones in LA to see something in me. Working with them changed my life forever. That was a time that really should have been documented. I got a record deal shortly after meeting them and have continued to make records to this day. The latest one is ‘Day of the Gun’ and it came out in early May of this year.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely started out very rocky… ‘Johnny, Are You Queer?’ was extremely controversial at that time…..there were protests, counter-protests, televangelists had all these conspiracies about me and I was banned in Amsterdam, all in the first year! I had record companies offer me contracts, including IRS, if I dropped the song but that was not how I wanted to start my career.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Paine Bros had a studio in the house they rented and the creative freedom of having something at your disposal whenever you were inspired or had an idea was addicting. After that, I always had my own studio. It began as a small home studio where I played all the instruments and produced these little recordings. That led to starting a real recording studio, CityLab, with Geza X, then Satellite Park with Geza and Paul Roessler in Malibu and finally at Kitten Robot Studios in FilipinoTown with Paul Roessler which grew into Kitten Robot Records. We’re an in-house operation and boutique label with a team of people who are great at what they do.

Day of the Gun, out May 2

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Not to be glib but I actually didn’t learn much in the pandemic that I didn’t know before. I’m just glad it’s over.
